My car started shifting EXTREMELY hard this morning

So my car has been periodically shifting hard, but this morning on the way to work EVERY shift was hard and it was harder than normal. Is my transmission going out? Do I just need more transmission fluid? I just had it in for an oil change about a week ago and they said my transmission fluid levels were good.

Is my transmission going out?

Probably. Check the fluid level. You can also get some additive stuff to help it, but it likely won't do much for you besides help get it to a mechanic...

I used to drive a 1990ish Ford Taurus, the ones that were notorious for blowing the tranny at about 140k miles. Well, mine blew at 144k. One day it was fine, the next almost completely dead.

Good luck with yours, damn trannies cost an arm and a leg to have replaced...

True, but diagnosing a transmission is very difficult. I would start with fluid and then move on to the sensors.

OK, so it could be a sensor then... well that's at least good to know. I really just want to know what all of the possibilities are.

Get a bottle of that Lucas Transmission treatment/fluid/whatever. It seems to work pretty well with worn out transmissions.

Where can I get it?

Dare I ask what this myserious fixing fluid does to help? Most of that bottled stuff has been shown to be ineffective. I havent heard of Lucas, maybe theyre different.

What type of vehicle do you drive. Have you searched the web for common transmission problems?

Any ideas where to look? As you can see from my post count, I don't spend much time on other forums. 🙁

The important thing, is that after all these posts, is that nobody knows what model car you drive, or even what transmission your car has.

Synchronizers could be slipping and not lining up the gears right or fast enough. Normally, you'll start grinding pretty hard soon if this is happening. Or if you have a cable style tranny, they could have stretched or loosened. It just really depends on what you have.

It doesn't even have to be the tranny. It can be anything from the clutch plate stiffening up to the gears going bad. It could be fluids, cables, or something as simple as a little grease being off. This is why you take it to mechanic if you have no clue what to do yourself, which you have no clue since you are on the internet.

The problem is finding the right mechanic. Why? Because it could be something as simple as the clutch plate needing grease or just being replaced but the mechanic can just tell you the whole thing needs to be dropped out and rebuilt or replaced. One is a cheap fix and the other fix isn't. Since you don't know jack crap you couldn't tell. So you either find a mechanic you trust, or get second opinions from different mechanics.
