My car just got hit :\

Ok so i was jsut in a parking lot and the guy pulling out didnt see my car (350z) and hit the front right. It's very minor scratches and bends, but nissan is not one of the sturdiest cars out there. Anyway, the bumper and right fender will have to be replaced for sure, now the guy has insurance and i got all his details. He was ver curtious about everything, adn since it's a very minor hit i didnt make a big deal out of it.

Anyway my question is: i could just go minimum and get everything replaced, or i could get a "step-up" bumper for just a little bit more. How does this work exactly, as far as insurance goes, i definatelly dont want to screw the guy over, but if it's not going to make much of a difference for him i figured might as well go for something better.

Dont want to come off as some scamming whiny bastard, just curious.

thanks

He hit you. Don't worry about screwing him over. Call your insurance, and if they tell you to call your local police, do that too. Do whatever you need to do to get your car back 100%.

I think the insurance company will write you a check for the value of the stock part. If you want something better, just pay the difference.

stock bumper = $215 from dealer unpainted (add a couple hundred to paint)
westwing bumper = 290 (unpained)

that kind of the deal..

if i really make up my mind i wouldnt mind adding some 70-80 bucks for an upgrade, but wouldnt mind not paying heh

Get him to pay the whatever the stock bumper costs, and you pay the difference for whatever body-kit you want.

He shouldn't have to pay for your rice.

why the rice comment when your miata is the one with the painted calipers?

Just take it to your local speed shop. The other guy will have an insurance adjuster come out, they'll give you an estimate (basically a breakdown of repair costs, you'll see a bunch of r&i, repair/replace, etc. + labor ) and the adjuster will cut you a check for the damages shown on the estimating system for local parts (based on zip code..probably not oem depends on model year). The printout is based on programs by ccc, adp, mitchell, etc. so if you are familiar with one, they all look fairly similar.

why don't you let him speak for himself? but now that you're defending him he's certaining going to say "my rice comment was not derogatory"

different bumper = rice?

heh also like i said before.. i'm not trying to get some money out of this guy.. just checking if people know if there's a way of getting free cheese from the insurance company... which i'm sure is not taking a big hit from dishing out another $100 or so..

now if you have something usefull to say.. as in how their payouts to me will effect his monthly payments, as in will he have to pay more if they pay me more.. or if you want to suggest a bumper (fs5 that ones not too bad, but not my style).

thanks

It was not derogatory. Why should the guy pay more? If I break something worth $50, you better bet your ass I'm going to replace a $50 part, not a $70 part.

Did you even see the pictures, or did you just click on my sig? I doubt anyone would seriously consider it rice.

EDIT: You guys are quick, you read my mind.

wait a minute, you're trying to get extra money of the insurance company? not a smart idea.

that does not mean that i have to specifically use that particular place, the one that does the estimate.. right?

i mean, wouldnt i be able to go to the most $$ repair shop in the area and get an estimate there and then go get it done for penies? just kinda seems like a loophole if that were true

😕 I clicked on your sig to SEE the pictures. A wingswest front bumper is no more rice than painted calipers. and when someone says rice it's usually derogatory. I've NEVER heard someone say "You're car is SO RICE!" as a postive thing.

heh you're right.. i dont even know why i'm trying to do this heh.. just too weasel my way out of my previous comment, lets jsut look at it as if insurance company is paying extra for the time and effort that i'm wasting while i'm doing all this..

heh i gotta stop before i turn into that guy that posted here about his car being hit by some old guy on a snowy road and getting "pain and suffering" payments..

It is a bit of a loophole...just note you are going to be paid on an industry standard as far as labor rates, parts used, and repair procedures. So if you can get it fixed cheaper, you keep the difference. However, if you take it to a place that charges more for labor and/or uses incorrect repair procedures, you'll pay out of pocket for the difference.

edit: and as a side note, if you are attempting a third party diminished value claim, I'd suggest at this time, its not really worth the trouble.

If it was red, or yellow, blue, or some outlandish color, it would be a different story. When people add aftermarket bumpers, gigantic spoilers, and huge fart tips, they usually do it to attract attention. They were not painted for attention. If I wanted attention, I would have painted it a different color. I simply wanted to get rid of the brake dust color and offer a cleaner look.

Would you rather have brake dust grey/brown or black?

This is rice
This is not.
