in manual mode, i turned off the auto assist mode. Is there a setting in auto mode, this is really irritating.

That strobing might be the red eye reduction preflash. Turn it off.

are you shooting in the dark? I would presume so if you have your flash up. If so, likely the AF assist. Custom FnIII: Auto focus/Drive AF-assist beam firing. disable that.

but be warned, that really does help AF a lot in dim lighting

Canon SLRs strobe the flash for AF assist; probably the single dumbest "feature" I've ever seen in a camera. It's annoying as hell and really should be deleted from the firmware.

Yup. Something that's glossed over by all the so-called "review" sites, but it would annoy the hell out of me in real life usage.

no, do not delete this feature. at least, until canon uses a real AF assist beam on the damn camera.

A red or white LED assembly would subtract at least 25 cents from Canon's bottom line, per camera. Good luck getting them to agree to that one. ;)

the original canon elan (~1990) had a near-infrared assist light. the eos d60 had an assist light. the 10D dropped it.

was there ever a real reason as to why?

canon claimed the 10D's autofocus was much better in low light than the D60's, so they didn't need the assist as much.

Lame. I almost bought an ST-E2 just to use the IR as AF assist. It seemed stupid to do so though, might as well stick the 550EX on there, heh

So I've just found in auto mode, it can't be done. I"m just going to use the Av or P modes, don't want to have anyone have seizure due to the strobing..stupidest feature ever for an SLR. Thanks for the input everyone!
