Edwards Complains About Focus on Dean
<snips>
"Why are we being asked in a debate whether Howard Dean is going to win?" Edwards asked. He was referring to a recent Democratic debate in which the candidates were asked to raise a hand if they thought Dean could beat President Bush in November.
...
"My campaign is not about Howard Dean. My campaign is about what John Edwards wants to do for America."
...
Edwards said he would avoid negative campaigning and the back-and-forth charges between the Democratic candidates.

Good message Johnny, but I don't think it'll get you much play in the primaries.

Anyone else think Edwards is trying to set himself up as a VP for the eventual nominee? He arguably has the best laid out plans on the most issues and he also has pretty much stayed away from directly calling other candidates out(except for the pick-up comment and such). He seems to be, if nothing else, the most grounded candidate out there although he lacks the *spark* needed to win the nod.

John Edwards' campaign isn't about Howard Dean and he was right for criticizing the media. However, I'd have to disagree with you that he has the best laid out plans or has the best message. A few others (Dean included) outshine him in those regards. The basic reason Edwards' message hasn't caught on is evident in that quote of his: "My campaign is about what John Edwards wants to do for America". Its generic, boring, and offers nothing new. Yes he has good, moderately liberal ideas. But he has failed because he doesn't have the walk to back up his talk. He's a one term Senator with no notable accomplishments. Gephardt, Kerry, Lieberman, Dean, and Clark all have a more tangible record behind them.

I don't think he's trying to set himself up to be the VP. He desperately wants to be President and probably still thinks he can and will win. Unfortunately, he ruined a promising career as a Senator when he announced his seat open in 2004.

Well, we could argue what plans are better laid out, but what I meant by that is he does have alot of specific things laid out whereas the others seem to be a little more "generic" on some of their plans.
And no, I didn't forget about his seat vacancy and I actually factored that into my questioning for VP. It definately would help in some of the south for him to be VP, but I don't know if his "breck girl" image(it's in the news now so I can use it:p) plays to his advantage.

But yes, his short career leaves him little to boast about.

Yes I agree he has impressively detailed plans. His universal child healthcare plan is far and away the most realistic of any of the candidates with healthcare reform plans.

While he would be somewhat appealing as a VP candidate, there are far better candidates. His short career is yet again another huge liability, and I don't know how well he'd really complement any of the other frontrunners. I've found the Dean/Clark bruhaha amusing because anyone who saw Dean in Florida the other week could easily conclude that Dean desperately wants Bob Graham to be his running mate. In my opinion, Bob Graham is far and away the most suitable of the 10 dwarves to be our next President and I was sad to see him leave the race. Then, there is the rumour floating around the DNC that Sam Nunn of Georgia (described as the Dick Cheney of the Democratic Party) is being courted to be the VP if the current frontrunner wins the nomination.

Sen. Edwards Files Suit Against Pres. Bush
(2003-09-16) -- Sen. John Edwards, D-NC, filed a class-action lawsuit today on behalf of "regular people" against George Bush, claiming that the president has manufactured a defective economy which is "unsafe at any speed."

Mr. Edwards, a novice politician who made millions as a personal injury attorney, said he's asking the court to award him the Democrat presidential nomination as well as victory in the November 2004 election.

"We all know that elections are decided by the judiciary in our great nation," said Mr. Edwards. "That makes me the perfect candidate, and I intend to have my day in court -- for the benefit of the regular people, of course."
