My cable modem is down - what to do?

I just got back from a long trip and turned on my system. The PC loads great but the cable modem is having probs. I have a Toshiba modem model PCX 1000 with 5 lights: power, cable, PC, data and test. When I turn it on the unit goes through it's own self test/diagnostic and ends up with just the power and PC lights on - no cable light! I called my provider and they said I should have a signal to the house. They made an appointment to send out a tech on tuesday - tuesday! I can't wait that long! BTW I am using a separate dialup account until then.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what the prob might be and what I could do to correct it? Thanks for the help.

do you have a router? or are you going direct from PC to cable modem?

if you have router, go directly from cable modem to PC and bypass router. see if your PC can get an IP address.

I already hit the reset button and the condition continues. I do not have cable TV, I have DirectTV. I only have one ethernet card so I cannot do a swap out. I don't think it's the card because the cable light indicates that the modem is not getting a signal.

the cable modem isn't picking up a signal.

call cable company again and see if you can talk to another tech. different techs have different levels of knowledge.

you might have just gotten a bad one the first time.

Lets see, unplugging the power and plugging it back in. If that does not work I would think that one of your main lines that is running the cable to your room has been disconnected or something happend. How long have you been gone? Do you live by yourself? If you have family or room mates ask them to see if anything happend.

A while back my cable modem kept going out and I was like WTF! A tech came out and pointed out to me that my gf's family upstairs from us were stealing cable from us. They put a splitter to split the cable to their room and then back to my line.

Check it out.

I have a Netgear router but I removed it from the system to make sure it was not the problem. With the router gone the problem continues.

Nocturnal, interesting story. I live in a single family detached home with only one cable entering the house. I was gone a week and my significant other reported probs from time-to-time all week. I am beginning to think that while the company said I should have a signal, I'm just not getting it at the modem. Thanks for the story.

i've had my cable company tell me worse. like try to grab an IP while the modem clearly isn't even connected yet and such nonsense.

NP. If that's the case you can only wait it out. Also, you can call your cable company to see if they can get someone out earlier. Often times people cancel or when the guy shows up nobody is there so they call in to see if there are any rush jobs that needs to be done.
