My cable company is incompetent

My cable company decided to upgrade the firmware on all of their cable modems earlier this week, apparently without testing it first. On all modems that have integrated VoIP this caused a MTU limitation of some sort, which wreaks havoc with most sites I try to visit. Thankfully AT is one of the few sites I can visit. Tech support has been worthless. They acknoledge the problem that is affecting ALL people with their VoIP service, but its been 3 days and they have not corrected it. If it truly was a firmware upgrade that caused the problem, a simple rollback of the firmware should be a quick fix right? I cannot access motorola's site to download the firmware, can someone please help me out. The modem is a SBV5220. If someone could help out I would really appreciate it. Also, does anyone know of a way to see what my MTU is being limited to?

Thanks,
Tim

20 bucks says when you contact them they'll tell you to contact your ISP.

If you're behind a router too, it's possible you need to change it's MTU settings. I've seen it happen before when many sites work fine and other just plain don't work because of it. I've never bothered to figure out why, but apparently it happens.

$50 says your right. Guess I'm SOL since my ISP is incompetent...

I still can't believe they didn't test it beforehand...

shens.

VoIP uses small pacekts so it isn't a MTU problem.

If you want to fix it set the MTU on your machine to 1400.

I actually checked that before I called their tech support. I pinpointed the problem when my xbox wouldn't log on. It actaully Id'd the specific problem for me. The problem has been narrowed down the the modem. My nieghbors all work fine, I'm the only one with VoIP though...

Read the post, my PHONE works fine. My MTU is set to 1500, thats not the issue. My cable modem is integrated with my VoIP, so the firmware runs both.

Have you set the MTU on your PC to 1400 yet?

If not then STFU. You're the imcompetent one, not your cable company.

You're one of "those people" that won't listen to advice and think you know better.

Why would I??? When I plug my Xbox directly into the modem, I get an MTU error. The ISP has acknoledged it as THIER error, so your the one that needs to STFU. Looks like your incompetent well

While yours may be incompetent, I have come to the conclusion that my Charter Cable is incontinent -
they are crapping all over themselves - reducing service and charging more and more for less and less.
They just re-evaluated their local comitment to 'Expanded Basic' and found a way to eliminate 1/3
of the carried feed on a technicality of their local liscening agreement, so they sent crews out to add filters to the lines.
They never have been able to get the interference and spotty service and reoccuring regional outages
solved, but they were instantaly onto a paln to find a way to charge an extra $ 5 a month for another
laayer of 'Premium Expanded Basic' if you would commit to another year of service at an extra $ 5 per month
but ONLY if you made it a Electronic Auto Pay subscription for the first year - they'll want more next time.

I'm weighing my options, and the future doesn't have Charter Communications in it after the first of the year.

That would be your workaround.

Xbox Live won't connect, and it needs 1364, so I'm obviously not getting that, so I doubt 1400 would do me any good. I have changed it to check anyway, I will report back after my reboot.

Once again, if you read my post, I don't know what this firmware is limiting it to, and need a way to find out. If the limit is smaller than 1400, which I believe it is, your workaround wont work. I believe the smallest MS recommends you change it to is 1400, so it looks like my workaround is fixing the firmware issue.

Just changed my MTU to 1400, no dice. Next?

try pinging a site that responds to pings with packets in 100 byte increments to see if it really is a MTU problem.

Throw ethereal on your PC and capture it. If you like I'd even take a look at the trace to see what is going one.

Lastly, just keep calling the cable company. Residential services aren't known to be quick to respond. If they did a big upgrade they may be swamped.
