you ever been to a drift show or competition?

If it doesn't impress me, why would I bother going? Is there something that i'll see at a show that I'd have to waste time attending that I'm missing in the countless videos I've seen?

Drifting isn't that impressive, its not hard to do if you have a rear wheel drive vehicle. I used to do it all the time in my old $400 1983 Celica GT with the sh!t brown exterior and rust patches to match. Not saying it's not fun, but I don't see why its a spectator sport?

I always love the retorts......have you ever been to a competition or show? It's like the kids just invented something new......drifting, or power sliding, in a nice, smooth, predictable asphalt surface. Hate to say it, but with a bit of practice, on that sort of surface, with the penalty being knocking down a few cones or spinning out rather harmlessly, "drifting" is a skill that almost anyone that can drive can accomplish. Try your "drifting" on a very unpredictable surface, such as the rough dirt road surfaces like rally cars face, with the penalty being turning the car over or something such as that, and I'll be impressed.

Oh wait, that was something we were doing 30 years ago as teens screwing around at night........four-wheel drifts on dirt roads, at night. Makes for a very fun evening, especially when the road is barely wide enough for two cars to pass each other and the ditches on either side ar 2-3 ft. deep. More than one car/truck ended up on its side because the road had a pothole/rut from water running across/animal standing in the road (deer most common).......and that threw off the vehicle's control.

What we'd have given to be able to have a nice smooth asphalt area to play around on.....but then, all the fun would have been taken out of it. Heck, we'd take VW Beetles out in the woods and try "drifting" between trees. We hammered more than a few VWs that way.

Typical response... drifting is easy... blah blah... thats why no americans made it to the finals... because they couldn't follow the racing line around the track WHILE drifting. Oh well whatever...

Granted its nothing like rallies or whatever... but ever think that the real fans of this thing are actually fans of rallying as well? i know i am... the thing is this drifting thing has been heavily commercialized... but you're right... drifting in a parking lot doesn't really have the :Q factor... but its still great fun... and easily accesible... instead of taking your car and having it go on a dirt road. I cant really change your mind... and the fact that theres a poser bandwagon in the US now... that's just going to make things worse and more people will soon look at it like you do now... i dont know about where you live but over here... you'll see idiots that cant drive for shxt 'drifting' around whatever mountain passes are close by... :frown:

I'm sure that to do it competitively (on street) it does take some skill, but its something that any schmuck off the street with a rwd car can do if they have a parking lot nearby. The amount of skill required is easily attainable when compared to rally racing, or even regular road track racing for that matter. There just isnt really that much to it, and when you take out all the good things about rally racing (nowhere to get good traction if you need it, dangerous surroundings, bumpy trails and actual racing), whats left just doesn't strike me as very interesting.

I'm aware that the fans of it are probbably fans of rallying. I just grow tired of the fans of it trying to legitimize it as some kind of sport.
