My buddies are trying to talk me into joining them in.. everquest

ok guys, i usually have a thing against pay to play, but allot of my friends say everquest is great and they are encouraging me to try it, they say that i can just pay for the basic and if i need anything they can buy it from me because they have all the expansion packs. but the thing is, i have heard disturbing things of this game, is it true that it takes over your life cause its so addicting? i know it came very close to destroying my uncle's marriage (litterally) his wifed forced him to give it up and they came close to getting a divorce. but, is it a first person shooter and how are the graphics? and cant i get cards at EB to try a few months, or should i not even try it becuase of the possibility of massive addiction?

I'm a big RPG fan, and I've purposefully stayed away from the MMORPGs for that very reason. I can't afford to get addicted, not so much for the monetary aspect as time - some of my friends became hooked enough that they'd invest more time into the games than sleep.

I know exactly what you mean diego... I have wasted enough of my life in RPGs. I don't really want to pay for the priviledge of wasting my time with a huge community of people! BUT WoW looks VERy tempting...

Heck, if your friends are willing to go so far as buy you the game, I'd say go for it. MMORPG's can be a lot of fun and addiction is only a problem if you have serious problems with self-control. Don't forget that it's just a game.

I am glad I was able to escape from MUDS many years ago, and I don't doubt that it is great. My co-worker has literally lost friends to the game. These people are never available for anything outside the game. Diablo2 was bad enough addiction-wise. I also balk at $120+ per year to play it. No game is that good.

Yes, mmorpgs are like diablo but from a first (or third person) perspective. You kill monsters, get items, advance levels, rinse and repeat. They are addicting, you make lots of friends from all over the world. They keep releasing expansions which add new monsters to kill and new items to get. Some have good pvp, some don't (I think EQ has very limited pvp).

The graphics suck azz. You can prolly run EQ on a p2 300 and voodoo3 video card.

I played Dark Age of Camelot for about 2 years on average about 6 hours a day (like 3 or 4 hours during the week, 12 - 16 hours a day on the weekends). Once you drop them, you suddenly wonder when they made days so much longer...

I played EQ for a few months, got bored, the pvp wasn't there. DAoC is a helluva lot better IMO but less popular. If you want good graphics in a mmp, try Asherons Call 2. It's not a very fun but the graphics are nice.

Try running EQ with all expansions on a p2 300mhz? Are you kidding me. If you do that, you deffinetly dont have it running with all possible particle effects on high and new graphic models turned on! No wonder you say the graphics "suck azz" lol

lol about the graphics. Just to load all the models you need a gig of RAM, and you probably want a radeon 9800xt if you want particles on full in a nice resolution. They upgraded them significantly over the years.

The main thing is addiction - people I Know in this game, I often find it very hard to get in touch with them if I don't go into the game. I've been addicted in the past, don't plan on it again, etc...but I play for the people and the fun. I once knew someone who wanted to pay for my subscription so I would play with her. (I didn't accept)

It could definitely be fun to try, and since you have friends who are very into it they can probably show you the ropes so you don't get too frustrated. Still the best MMORPG content wise and that will continue, maybe City of Heroes or World of Warcraft will change that, maybe.

The graphics are pretty good. It is first person perspective, but not a shooter type game. D2 is no comparison. More like Dark Age of Camelot.

Addictive is an understatement.

The way the game works, other than the first 20 levels or so, in order to make more glan glacial progress building your characters experience & items, you have to fight in groups (actually it's still glacial but not nearly as bad).

Problem is, if you play less than 8-12 hours a day, the people you normally group with will outlevel you, and you will be continuously looking for a new group. Also, getting to where you need to fight can take hours, especially in that situation, leaving little time to actually play the game unless you are playing for really long stretches at a time. DAOC is A LOT better in this regard.

There is also the issue of the game having a history of introducing items/loot drop rates that should never have been, particularly when any new zone is added, then nerfing it heavily once these new things are discovered. So basically if you aren't there first, you don't get.

The pressure to keep up with everyone else is what will keep you addicted.

I am a huge MMO fan. They have so much more to offer than a single player RPG. They are the only games worth purchasing =P And the money per month does suck, but it is nearly a necessity for the company to keep servers up and the customer support staff on salary. DAOC has some of the best CS agents of any company ever.

I agree with the DAoC > EQ thing

but I've become a bit jaded against MMORPG's, though. they just get really boring and repetitive for me a few months into them. it just becomes "find a group -> get exp and/or camp a mob -> repeat".

the only time I really enjoyed them was when I played with a whole group of people I knew IRL. sophomore and junior year of college, almost everyone on my floor in the dorm played EQ on the same server. that was really fun... nothing like grouping with someone that you can shout at IRL. hehe.

Glug is pretty much spot on. I'll add that what makes the game fun is grouping with people you know. Your friends are encouraging you to start up.....are they gonna group with you? If they are more than four or five levels ahead of you it's gonna be tough for you to get experience points. EQ was a great ride (almost 2 years for me) because there was always stuff in the game to bring me back. I didn't get addicted but lots of peeps do and it becomes a huge time sink.

I was never in to MMORPGs until I got a taste of WOW. The game can be very time consuming for all the worn reason, but I also can be a lot of fun for the right reason. You need to find a good balance between playing and living.

I for one will be playing WoW when it's finally launched.

I can only agree. I have a friend who was literally "submerged" for the best of three years playing UO. I've tried it, too, and realized that half a year had passed without me actually seeing some sunlight. Which is why I havn't ever touched anything of this category again after that.

After playing 4+ years on UO I have to agree, MMORPGs rape your social life.

You can't have fun unless you are getting better/richer and you can't get better/richer without blowing ALOT of time.

My advice? Take up heroin before an MMORPG...

EQ is FAR from dying. They just released a new expansion at the beginning of the year, and two new servers since then.
