My brother needs some advice on getting a new laptop

Ok, so my brother has had his current laptop for almost 3 years now, and its starting to show signs of age.... and its slowly being outdated.
And since i only know about desktop hardware, im asking for the forums help on deciding what to do...

First, this is his current laptop

* G732 Notebook P4 Barebone w/16" screen/DVD-RW

* Intel Pentium 4 3GHz, socket 478, 512k, 533MHz

* (x2) 512 Mb PC2700 (333MHz) 200 pin DDR Memory

* IBM 60GB EIDE Hard Drive

* Internal DVD-RW Drive (CD/DVD-Rom, CD/DVD-RW)

* Microsoft Windows XP Professional

The only thing im not sure on (i dont have the laptop in front of me to check) is the video card, but at the time he got it everthing was top of the line, so im taking a guess, but i think its an X300 or X something series card (or Nvidia equivalent)

With all of that, first off (and i sorry if im not allowed to ask this), how much could i sell it for now a days?

Ok, now onto the building questions

So, what would be a good high end Notebook, but keeping it on the "bang for your buck" type of price range (basically, for however much he can sell his old laptop for is how much he can spend on the new one, plus maybe a little extra)???

Or, whats a good website that builds affordable custom laptops?

For a 3 year old laptop that is pretty much still top of the line. It may be outdated in size and weight, but not functionality. I would tell him to backup data and reinstall windows XP. That should breath some new life into it.

Well, its starting to show signs of wearing out

His RAM is randomly cuasing non-boot ups just because the contact points are either weakend, or cruded up (about every 2 months i need to take them out, clean the pins and put them back in)

any suggestions on what to do...... he basically thinks that if he doesnt upgrade now and sell his current laptop, it might get worse and break (in which case he wouldnt be able to sell it)

Unfortunately there are no price checks.

However visit discountlaptops.com, powernotebooks.com, and proportable.com if you want to build some whitebox notebooks. I prefer the Asus models. 🙂

OH man this is gonna start a flame fest!!!!

I would keep what he has there, but if he really wants to get a new one....

Dell Inspiron 9300!!!

Well ill talk to him more about it and post back

Im going to also see if you wants it limited to a laptop, or if you wants to finally get a desktop PC (in that case, i know i could build a good one)

as far as his budget goes, its basically however much his old laptop would sell for (im thinking around $800-$1200)

even if there is no performance gains, itd be good for him to get a new one, before his current one bites the bullet (and hell be stuck with nothing)
