My brother is now missing an ear drum.

My brother was involved in a tow-in surfing accident on Wednesday, and tore his eardrum. The doctor said he couldn't see any ear drum at all left, and set him up with an appointment at an ear specialist. It's possible that my brother may need surgery to regain hearing in that ear.
