It hasnt changed in years, i dont recall him ever having a job. We both used to get in trouble with the law all the time but i realized it was time to change...
I tell him he cant keep bumming money of me, if we go to a bar he's always begging quarters off me to play the damn claw machine, of all things :disgust:
So now he's living with me, because i just cant throw him out on the street, because he is my brother and i do love him, and i kinda feel responsible for getting him in trouble when we were younger.
So the other day i tell him to get the want-ad's out and look for a job, he finds an ad for an airline pilot and the idiot asks me if he should apply...
A friend of ours is a waiter at a local resturant/bar and offered to help him get a busboy job, but my brother thought he was too good for it :|
Anyways he finally took the job :) i hope everything works out...

Every family has one.At least you are there for him .You ever look at a homeless person and wonder where in the hell are you supposed to be ?

People get that way from 3 things. The first is inherent laziness and the second is low self-esteem and the third the feeling that friends and relatives will take care of him if when he fails. Self-esteem issues are harder to fix than the other two.

Be wary of becoming an enabler. By helping him get a job and giving him a place to stay, you are enabling him to continue his behaviour, which sucks because you want to give him a place to stay and help him get a job... If you truly worry about your brother's ability to turn into a man who can and will fend for himself and have some ambition, you may want to sit him down and talk about it. THAT will be a tough conversation, I assure you.

I hate those types of people...

My family is currently paying for a no-good uncle (who happens to have an English degree) to sit around and do absolutly nothing all day while living in a condo my parents would like to rent out..

The guy literally will not lift a finger. If you try to talk to him, he'll slam his door shut and sit in his room.. The guy could easily make enough to pay his way - and he doesn't even try.

You should tell your brother that he has to pay rent. And, be strict.. Tough love teaches where love fails.

OP: What is your job? If it is important work, you may want to have your brother around to help you.

if someone doesn't do something with this guy, he'll never change. He really needs to come to the realization that he can't go through life that way.

My middle brother was similar, except he was into heavy drugs, drinking and driving, couldn't hold a job for 6 months, and wanted to party all the time.

he finally grew up, somehow and he does really well for himself. owns a house, a few acres, and has custody of his wonderful daughter.

it's hard to be the 'bad cop' but he will continue to take advantage of you, and the rest of your family until you all turn off the tap.

I see.....it's okay for you to come in a thread and derail it with your pie neffing, but you can't take it when it happens to you?

Best thing you can do is stop supporting him like a crutch. Better for you, and if he isn't totally worthless, better for him.

Help him out only to the point where he can start supporting himself. i.e. - Help him find a job (have him keep looking for a job even with the busboy), help him find an apartment, help him realize that he can't be lazy forever and think things will come his way someday.
