My brother has 500 DL/50 UL speed and is trying to backup the plex server from my house to a server at his house

I have 500/500 speed, but the max speed he is getting to copy things over is 50 he said. He said something to the effect of the DL speed is dependant on UL speed? Why is that?

Is there anything we can do to make the copy go faster?

You sure you have 500 upload? That's kinda nuts

The only thing I can think is there is something in-between - for example if he is copying the files on his desktop to his NAS, it could be first running through the desktop instead of directly to the NAS.

Or maybe I'm totally wrong.

It's not that crazy - I have 900 up. Fios gigabit FTW.

If his upload is capped at 50 - that's the max hes going to be able to upload unless he gets a better plan from his ISP

He is not uploading, he is downloading from my house.

How far away are the two houses? Distance can play a factor in this for sure.

his upload speed has more to do with his actual plan...what download speed is he paying for? you haven't mentioned that yet...

Are you sure he isn't looking at a MB/s measurement instead of a Mb/s?

This is my guess. But it could also be getting throttled by your ISP. Many times upload speeds get throttled by ISP's for certain kinds of traffic. So your speed test looks great and then your real life upload speed is a fraction of that. But also remember a MB/s is going to be 1/8th of your Mb/s.

the question should be: how are you transferring the files? FTP? Torrent? or does Plex has it's own file transfer software?

Verified he is reading Mb/s.

He is using sftp to copy the files.

that would be the problem. use a proper ftp client and server on your side that can use a lot of connections. FileZilla is decent

Torrent would probably be the best way for maximum speed. FTP can be hit or miss, though some clients allow you to do multi-threaded downloading, which will split a single file into chunks and download each at the maximum speed for each particular thread. If one thread is limited to 2MB/s, and you allow up to eight threads, your download speed for a file can then be 16MB/s.

The main issue is the installer of the FileZilla FTP software, which is said to use suspicious ways of transmitting poor-quality, even potentially malicious applications. The scandal exploded when people started to complain that virus-detecting programs started signaling them about possible threats in their devices.

The investigation led to the fact that the software in question was added during the installation of FileZilla, which offers a bundle of programs. Owners of FileZilla do not deny their participation in the monetization through third-party applications. According to them, this strategy helps them raise finances for fixing bugs and other issues in FileZilla.

Have you guys heard about this issue with filezilla?

I would not use normal ftp if you care about security, that's not even encrypted and easy to hack into unless you're setting up an IP rule as well.

sftp is ok but yeah there is an overhead. Should still be decently fast though. Just tested locally and got 122MB/sec. That's local mind you at gig speed, so that's about the speed I would expect. So at 500mbps should get around 50-60MB/sec or so.

I hate this crap so much. Can't trust anything these days. Wonder if it does the same under Linux or if the distro packagers make sure to strip all that stuff out.
