My Brand New Antec True Power PSU 480

Ok, I posted a topic about how my generic crappy 350 (Ez Media) psu wasnt providing stable voltages/too voltages on the 5V Rail. I posted and some recommend Antec and I agreed because of the fact I knew them but never had them before. System was running fine when normally clocked because system was able to provide enough voltage when normally clocked apposed to overclocked. Ordered it and about 4 days later I recieve it (Today). I was very excited because this was a TOP Notch high quality power supply. I Disconnected everything from the main board (OLD PSU) installed new PSU and hooked up everything properly and made sure there was NO POSSIBLE way the system could short out or anything like that. Made sure the CPU and motherboard cables were hooked up and everything else. Then anticipation was growing, I hooked up the PSU and the lights on my MOBO lit up! I was very excited so when I turned on the psu all was going well but THEN I heard a spark and smelled smoke and there was smoking coming from my FDD. I Removed the power cable immediately and surveyed the damage the red wire on the 5V rail for FDD was melted and I saw a little Solder on the tip of the connector. I said out loud SH!T!!!! Then thought oh maybe I put it in wrong but I've never had this happen before! So I disconnected just that and was very scared to turn on the system but assumed all should be well. I turned on the system and I heard a spark AGIAN! This time it came from my brand FRICKEN new 120 GB Maxtor drive and I smelled/saw smoke. It was a lot less but I was still freaked so I disconnected the power cable. I was freaking out and about 4 hours later I "mustered the courage" to remove the OLD (NEW PSU) and hook up the old (Original PSU) back into the system agian making sure nothing could go wrong. Even avoiding the FDD. I turned on the system and ran fine for about 5 seconds then I smelled smoked coming from the same fricken 120GB drive removed the cable and NOW I'm Pissed! ARGH! I'm obviously goanna RMA this fricken PSU but I dont see how it could have passed any tests! Question: Is Antec goanna refund me for my HDD too because THEY fried it!? Its gotta be fried if smoke NOW comes outta the drive despite the fact I'm using the old PSU. Is there any hope for me/ compensation!? IS THIS FRICKEN COMMON or am I one in a million?

I have 3 Antec PSUs (2 380's in sonatas and 1 old 400W) and haven't any problems with them. I'd say you're just unlucky. 🙁

I also have 3 Antec TruePower (2x330, 1x430) and no problems. I have seen a problem like you described. Had a Powmax (yeah yeah, hold the jokes) die because of a floppy drive hooked up wrong. Damn near impossible to hook up hard drives and CDROM drives wrong, but most floppy drives are pretty easy to hook up wrong. Basically a *POP* and the power supply died a quick death. Luckily nothing else burnt up that time.

thats really crummy luck. call antec,i'd imagine they'd refund you the retail price of your drive for your troubles in this freak accident. i've had my fair share of generic PSUs crapping out with lots of sparks and a light show, but they have never killed any hardware. fuses do wonders usually.

i have a friend who's PS took out all three of his hard drives. WD RMAed them all without a problem because they were still under warranty and there was no visible damage.

i think your hard drive as long as it's covered under warranty should be replaceable by WD... i know that maxtor is really generous with their RMA's...

as for the psu, test your rails to make sure they are okay...

short out the psu with a U-shaped pin and measure the 3.3, 5, and 12 volt rails directly to make sure they are okay.

I still like Antec power supplies, but my 400W in my main box died about a month ago.. sparked and blew up. I've since replaced it with a Vantec ION 400W powe supply which just reeks of quality. I love this thing.

You totally got bad luck dude, Antecs are not notorious at all for that, but if you have to replace it with something else I really do recommend this Vantec. great power supply. and it has a 500W Max output too!

good luck getting everything fixed.

I maintain a work fleet with about 3 dozen Antec power supplies in our desktop rigs, plus one powering our primary domain controller (server) and one in our backup domain controller. I also use one at home. They're great. 🙂 Sounds to me like you might've gotten your floppy plug one pin off, that would explain the 5V meltdown. 🙁

So true, because if you touch half the pins, or the wrong pins temporarily ... boom.

Not only that, but you have 12 volts on some of those pins... 12 volts is 12 volts whether it's a car battery or a PC power supply... you WILL create a spark by plugging in "hot" connections.

No infact I actually turned off the PSU switch to off but I wonder why would it matter if it was set to on when I hooked it up to the motherboard it's not like it was powered in.

You said you hooked up the PSU and the lights on your mobo lit up... they can't light up if nothing was plugged into power...

Forgot to mention that they lit up after I switched on the PSU but didnt turn on the computer. I thought of it a as a minute detail.

I have always used PC Power & Cooling PSU's....I tried the Hot Deal True Power 430 last year and got a DOA one with a complete system of parts plus some existing ones...Needless to say assuming the new stuff was ok it made for a long troubleshooting game.

Sent it back and got a PCP&C TurboCool 425 instead 🙂

I am thinking a 510 if I upgrade to 2.6/2.8C

I bought the same 480w Antec power supply about a week ago. So far my only complaints are that the cables are too long and make a mess in my case, and the power supply fan monitor connection doesn't seem to work. Not sure if it's the power supply that's the problem or my motherboard's connector, I haven't tried messing around with it to where the problem was.

they are nice power supplies, but a 510W for a P4 system? totally overkill... my 400 is more than enough to power my Dual MP1800, GB RAM, 9800 pro, 2 hdd's, 2 opticals, etc.

Well my rig has 4 opticals, 2 HDD's, a PCMCIA adapter and superdisc, 6 80 mm fans, etc.

If I trim it down I will keep the 425. If I upgrade and esp if I add 2 more HDD's I am not sure.

i had an 480w Antec, rails were kinda off and not stable as i would want them. I'm happy with the upgrade, Enermax EG651P-VE(FMA).

I had an Antec 550 watter pop so loud and smoke on the first time I turned on the pc, my cat took a dump in the floor!

I think we were both just unlucky, it also took my motherboard to burnt up heaven as well.

I have had three of the older Antec 400-watt dual fan power supplies. All died premature deaths in less than one year, replaced with less expensive Allied 450-watt and never looked back.

Recently I bought two of the 350-watt Coolmax with the 120mm fan. Very strong voltages, quiet and cool. And physically heavy just like my Allied. The best guide to a quality power supply seems to be weight, not the name.

Well isnt there a reason why name brands become name brands? What other "high Quality" brands can you guys recommend? Because I want a PSU the no one has had a problem with that wasnt thier fault.
