My Brain Hurts!! Best LCD for Radeon PRO 9000?

Hello Techie gurus!! I've spent hours going thru dozens of threads... hundreds of inputs... and 4 ibuprofen!! Please help!?!

Running Win 98 SE on an AMD 2200, 512DDR, Radeon PRO 9000 - 128MB, with a cheapie KDS 19" monitor. I'm ready to jump to an LCD ($800 max) Which way do I go?

Not an avid gamer, but I do dabble a bit and want a better quality experience... What other inputs should I be giving you or asking for????

All I know is when I have called on you guys in the past... you have always come through!! Thanks in advance!!

😎

If you game, look for a 16ms LCD. Right now, the only LDs with 16ms panels are 17": the Hitachi CLM174 and NEC 1760NX, IIRC. GamePC should have reviews of both with plenty of pictures.

Just stop by a PC store first, look for a 17" LCD connected to a PC (not running off a store feed among a wall of displays) running at native 1280x1024 resolution, and make sure you're comfortable with the text size.

Dual inputs (DVI and VGA) would be nice if you want to run two PCs thru a single LCD. If not, then make sure you get one with a DVI input, as that's pretty much a must with LCDs to ensure optimal quality.

Good Morning!!

The Dell 1800fp.... I have seen that numerous times before.

Currently running 1280x 1024 - okay with that...

Where do you buy them?
Is there any (retail) place to see it in action?

You don`t need 16ms for gaming unless you play really fast games,I game a lot and find my 25ms 19" Samsung 191T is fine, like all things it depends on the games you play, how much you`ll notice ghosting etc, which means only your eyes will give you the true answer.

In general 25ms/20ms are ok for gaming ,but 16ms is the best you can get for gaming at present, just remember if you play really slow type games then the response time will not be that important.

Btw using DVI will give you best IQ and response time over analogue.

another vote for 1800fp, although the official response time specs are closer to 30ms, I see absolutly no ghosting in games/apps I've tried so far ( UT2003, F1 Challenge, 3dmark01/03, Vice City ). I guess it's worth to mention that font antialiasing in WindowsXP on this LCD is broken. Apparently FP1800 uses a BGR signal configuration, as opposed to the traditional RGB, which makes font antialiasing in Windows virtually unusable - even with the MS ClearType Web configuration, which allows you to select between the two types, I couldn't get acceptable quality. BTW, Gnome 2 has no problems rendering antialiased fonts on this monitor.

I bought mine from Dell Home, with discounts/coupons mine was just over $400.

Okay, okay my newbie roots are showing...

font anti-aliasing?
BGR?
RGB?

What are these, are they important, and how do they come into play?

Font Anti-Aliasing:
Smooths the edges of onscreen text. Windows can do this.

BGR:
Not a clue.

RGB:
Red, Green, Blue.
The video signal basically. On TVs, using RGB inputs on it provides a better picture.

As usual guys... Thank you so much!! Gotta little homwork to do, but I think I will head towards the Dell. Will probably do in the next coupla weeks so I can keep an eye on the coupons as well....

Again thanks a bunch!!

BGR = RGB, rearranged (blue green red, rather than red green blue). HigherGround, Microsoft has a Cleartype tweaker you can use to accomodate BGR displays. Try Googling for it, or searching Anandtech's or Ars' AV forums.

I'm in the market for a pair of LCD's up until reading this thread, I was trying to decided between the Samsung 172N ($399) and 192N($599). What I like about the Samsung monitors is the extremely small border; the image also looks ok in the store. I?ll use the monitors to do a little bit of everything. After reading this thread I searched the web for reviews of the Dell 1800fp and found only positive ones. Unfortunately Dell doesn?t have it?s products in retail stores, so it is hard to check them out. I was wondering what people thing of the Dell form factor, specifically how wide are the vertical borders of the screen and how adjustable is the monitor. In addition, if anyone can compare the Dell to the Samsungs that would be great.

Thanks,

-Bruce

ps. If it matters I have a ATI Radeon 9800 graphics card.

Despite the 9000pros looking limited compared to the 9700/9800s and the fx5900s, then 9000pros are still very capuble cards, and can play the vast majority of todays games very well. Not to mention that their 2d quality is still very good, as is its DVD capibilites.
