My boss needs to grow a pair

Anyone else work with a spineless boss? A boss who is afraid to tell his employees bad news? A boss who can't give straight answers because he is afraid to break bad news? A boss who got the position through inheritance instead of merit? (thats my theory) Anyway...

I started a new job 10 months ago and was promised a 6 month performance review. I knew I wasn't promised a raise (it would be considered) but my review was excellent. On a scale of 0-5 (worst to perfect) I earned a 4 overall score which means excellent and above average. I really busted my ass trying to make a good impression, not to mention tons of overtime and many lost weekends upgrading our network and servers etc... I even spoke to other department heads who do reviews for thier own people and most of them agreed that even a 4 is rare to give out, most people earn a 3 which is average and meets expectations.

So...I got my 6 month review 2 months late (was pissed about that) and of course I was even more pissed I didnt get a raise. I respectfully questioned the owner/president and tried to make him see my way and he said he would put my request back under advisement. Fast forward to today I am STILL WAITING on an answer! :| :| :| 2 more months have passed and this coward still defers me to the side when I ask if he has reached a decision. Oh I am still considering it...oh I haven't reached a decision. WTF?!?! I don;t even care about the raise anymore, an answer would be nice at this point. My one year review is less than 2 months away, and I'm still waiting on an answer from my earlier review.

Not to mention this same president is still holding off on an answer for our department. He approved training classes for us and I was going to get an MCSE and CNE certification out of this training. Still no answer as to when we can start training...always the same "oh I'm still thinking about it. oh I havent reached a decision" :|:|:|

What is with this guy...why can't he give a straight answer...whats all the thinking about? When someone asks you a question, why does it take months to get a god damned answer around here? I don't know if its a lack of balls or just deliberate disrespect from this guy.

It's probably not a lack of testicals or an act of deliberate disrespect, he just probably doesn't want to pay you any more money.

Someone with any sense of respect would have the decency to say "No, your request has been denied" Whats so hard about being straight forward with people instead of keeping them hanging?

It's both. He can't face you and tell you in your face you aren't getting your raise and training and disrespectful to employees for dragging his feet on issues and not treating his employees very well.

My suggestion is to learn as much as you can there and when you are ready, move on to a better company.

Start looking for a new job. When you find one, go up to your boss and ask for an answer for your previous review. When he says he hasn't decided yet, tell him "In that case, I quit"

I hate this phrase from people!

Hey I'm sure he is happy he has a job but it doesn't give the boss the right to treat him like sh!t!

How's business? Maybe he wants to give you a raise, training, etc... but lack the funds.

Maybe he's waiting for this big order that never came in?

It's not easy being the boss. Some have given up their own salary just to meet payroll.

You have a passive-aggressive boss. He will never make a decision if he can avoid it, hoping that unpleasant things will just fade away if he stalls long enough. It's easy for him to rate you a 4 because that doesn't cost him anything (as you have learned). Getting you a raise is probably difficult, so he just ignores the issue. Same with the training - it's easy to say training is coming, but when it's actually time to spend the money... well, that's different.

I bet he has big plans for many aspects of the business. I bet it takes a very long time for those plans to become reality.

He's not going to change, I can assure you.

My prediction is that if you try to force his hand, he'll give you a lot of sweet-talk and promise you a decision very, very soon. Then he'll hate you because you made him feel uncomfortable, and you still won't get a decision.

You're only unemployed if you are A: Unable to work due to disability. or B: Too lazy to find work.

There is ALWAYS a job to do... even if one thinks they are too good to do it.

I lost a job in IT once and rather than sit on my arse drawing unemployment and waiting for another IT job to fall into my lap I went to work at an autobody shop moving scrap metal off the parking lot and detailing cars for 60+ hours a week. Eventually I found another IT job and NEVER drew one penny from the government.

The current unemployment figures are crap and misguiding.

***EDIT***

Oh yeah, during that time I drove a wrecker as well to make ends meet.

WIth my current job, I just kept pestering my supervisors about my first review... and then one day they made the time and PRESTO. Got my raise, and have been promoted and raised several times since. It sucks though when people with tons of seniority end up under me for projects and crap though... and they get blown off for reviews just like you're talking about...

I was looking for answers from people with actual pride in their work and themselves. Looks like you are fine with letting people sh!t on you and you would be the ideal sucker (I mean empoyee) my boss would hope for when hiring.

:D You must either be a psychologist or work in my company. And if you do, how did you get past the proxy to post this? ;)

yep, that describes him perfectly and I have noticed big changes in our relationship. Before we would somewhat joke around, I was trying to get to know him, getting on his good side, but now its a strictly business relationship. Sometimes I can't stand to see that guy and go out of my way to avoid talking to him.

And right-on with him plans taking a long time to become reality. He debated and sweated over our plans to upgrade the network for the longest time, oscillating back and forth between yes and no till finally the leases on our servers were almost up forcing a decision

Yeah good management tactics...and this is the guy I depend on to put food on my table. :(:disgust:

People like you should teach classes to lazy people on how to not be lazy. :)
