Not my immediate boss, but one level up.

We're talking in the hall this a.m. while waiting to brief our ceo and he brings up a sensitive/political issue we've been dealing with for a long time. He brings up the name of another employee - call him Bob.

Bob is significantly senior to me in years & position. But I know for certain that his alliegience & views on this issue don't align with our goals. So I basically told my boss - gee, I'm not sure Bob is really on board with this - in fact I think he's hostile to it.

So this afternoon Bob comes into my office saying that we need to talk because I'm mis-representing his position, and basically that I need to watch myself.

I have no idea why my boss went to this guy and told him all this - including who told him.

I suck @ office politics :(

Shrug - I thought it was something he needed to know as we go forward on this issue. And thought he had enough sense to keep my name out of it. Maybe he did, and just decided this was screw Armitage day.

yeah generally the best policy is to let others speak for themselves. you can state your opinion on the matter but leave the "and so'n'so will back me up!" or "so'n'so doesn't think that is a good idea." out of the conversation. some people tend to voice opinions to their fellow workers they wouldn't share with their boss. We like to call them push-overs in the business.

It's true... Nowadays you should never say ANYTHING at work about your job or a co-worker that you wouldn't want everyone to know. Many people are always looking for an advantage to move higher on the corporate food chain.... don't let your big mouth be an advantage for someone else.

but what if bob comes to OP and says "i hate the ideas posed by this company!" and the op then says to the guy in the AM "bob said 'i hate the ideas posed by this company!'" then am guy talks to bob and bob talks to op about misrepresenting. it's still hearsay and the OP can't prove bob said it whereas bob has good anti-defimation of character action goign for him.

to the op, yeah, it can be touchy. apparently, even the truth is relative.

your boss does suck, but you suck even more at office politics.

You have to learn to be diplomatic when talking about colleagues.

"Hostile" is a big word. I would have said "I don't know how much Bob is on the same page" as us, and left out allegience. You live you learn, boss is a moron.

I agree.

Something along the lines of...

"Yeah...um....I'm not completely sure of Bob's direction and intent but am proud to be on the same team. The three of us should touch base this week. Then we can circle back and do a pow-wow to synergize our motivations. All the next steps will fall into place from there. Glad we had this discussion and I'm looking forward to proactivization of our new paradigm."
