I'm in need to help! I have a few questions. (Cliff notes at the end, full story follows)

So he called to tell me that bad news. The only details he had for me were, " We (all 500 employees) have anywhere from 60 days to 13 months, depending on the individual. I wanted to get ahold of you before you got to work so you didnt walk into this. I'm sorry, I don't have any more information other than you have a meeting with HR at 3:50pm." God, I didnt know what to say. I was speechless. As some of you know, I'm getting married (check my sig) next year, so my initial thoughts after hanging up were concerning the wedding and my fiancee. I already felt like I let her down. After all, my fiancee and I are paying for everything and this would drastically effect it! I sat down, gathered my thoughts, and called my fiancee to let her know that there was a possibility my job could be gone in 60 days, worst case scenario. I beleive in being open about everything and besides, she deserves to know about this. She took the news well and assured me that we would do "what ever it takes to get the wedding to work....even if that means running off to Vegas" (how cool is she?!).

I went to work roughly 2 hours later and awaited my meeting with HR. Everyone at work was expectantly quiet and unusocial. I double checked the schedule to make sure I was at 3:50 and to see which HR personel I would be meeting with. Great, my meeting was at 3:50, but it was with the HR manager. Her reputation proceeded her, and was not good at all. I was a bit nervous to be honest with you.

At 3:50 pm I went upstairs and met with the HR lady. She informed me that my job would be expiring here in Q4 fiscal year. Not quite sure where exactly where that landed, she informed me that that falls under March-May of next year (!). "Yes!", I screamed in my head. She said, "this contract asures you that you will have a job with us until Q4, and that this is what your severance package includes." Curious about if the NOC was moved sooner than planned, I asked her some questions about this binding contract. she informed me, " If we move operations sooner, say December 31st -then we have to pay you until March. This is a binding agreement." I was so excited and happy that I was going to be employed for another year.

I walked back down stairs and bumped into the VP of technology. She said "Hey, I need to talk to you!" (I swollowed my tongue! Oh no, they want to pull back my date and fumble the contract! I thought). She said "But not now....give me two hours. We must discuss something".

Two hours later I show up at her office and sit down. Turns out they want to take me to Dallas with them and wanted to know if I would be up for that. Wow, wasnt expecting this! I screamed, "Yes!" internally again. I mean, I was already excited at the fact that they were guarenteeing my employment for a year. I told her I would consider it, but would need to see the paper work, the offer, and discuss this with my fiancee. Wooo hooo! So happy now! The future is looking bright! But, I do have some questions for you Dallas/Texas guys!

Cliff Notes
- Boss calls and informed me that our department is being relocated to another state, Dallas. My job could be over within 60 days.
- I get to work and talk to HR for more info, and they inform me that I have until March of next year, YAY!.
- I bump into VP of technology going back to my desk, she wants to see me in her office for a meeting.
- At meeting she informs me that the company wants to bring me to Dallas with them, and will move me there. All other details have not been formalized yet.

Questions!

Here is my question for you Dallas guys.

1) What is Dallas like?
2) I live in California right now. Anyone moved from Cali to Texas or more specifically, Dallas?
3) Sales tax in Cali is 7.75%. Sales tax in Texas is 6.26%, correct?
4) There is no state tax? If so, then that means I would be getting a pseudo "raise" in pay.
5) Whats housing like out there? I looked a little on the web and saw some good prices.
6) Whats the weather like there?
7) Is there really tornados?
8) If so, how bad?
9) What are the schools like? I've heard some good things.
10) Are the lakes there nice?
11) What are the people like?
12) Anyhting else you can tell me?

Thanks in advanced guys!

don't sign jack squat! period!

don't sign anything!!!!! Get an attorney to review any documents. I'm serious. I've seen this kind of situation go very bad, very quick. Get an attorney now.

Get your resume out there and start interviewing pronto! They are pulling a classic "bait and switch'...promise you the moon to get you to carry out operations until the inevitable.

You definitely have to consider how important your family is to you and your fiancee. My wife and I moved from Michigan to Georgia almost 5 years ago now because of work and I am looking for a job back in Michigan now. It was fine for both of us and we were really enjoying it until we had our daughter 2 years ago. Our families are missing out on a lot by not being near her and it's tough when you want to go out and get away for a bit but you can't because you don't have anyone you really trust to watch your child for you for that time.

Also, my wife's family is having some problems right now and it's really hard on her not being able to see them whenever she wants.

Just something to consider.

i hope you arent trying to contradict me with that link because it only verifies what I said

by the way all this off topic rambling will go to prove that we Texans are proud of our football so you'll have to deal with it
and for that matter, we're a proud state in general.

you morons who say bad things about dallas need to crawl back in your hole. warcrow, you have got to be KIDDING if you think you will get a front yard in dallas. i like it here and all, but my front yard in TN was 25x the size (literally) and that was SMALL. also, the roads here are total sh!t. whoever said that needs to get a clue. i work at an engineering firm, and i design roads once or twice a week. the soil here is a biznatch, so houses and roads tend to have problems with their foundations. its definitely something to be aware of if you buy a house. its hot as hell, but the women are extreme eye-candy. there is a ton of stuff to do, lots of places to go, and a very wide assortment of places to eat. downtown is fun, it has a few awesome malls (the galleria), and the DART is pretty cool for getting around during the crowded times. dont be fooled by enthusiasts. there are ups and downs, and you have to weigh it with your other options.

personally, i would say move because dallas has a lot to offer in terms of jobs compared to many places. also, it is generally a fun place, although it lacks in some areas (for example the roads suck a big fat one).

Job probably won't be an issue, either way I go. Thanks for the honesty.

oh, and even though the airport is a little bit of a journey from the remote parts of DFW (the metroplex) it is an easy drive because an interstate goes right through it. the tollway and the bush (another tollway) make getting around a lot easier

Midwest in general is very laid back compared to SoCal. The housing costs are way cheaper. the Humidity in texas sucks, feels like baking in a hot oven in the summer. Furthermore, if you aren't "caucasian" then get prepared for a culture shock. I.E. less diversity, more staring from people.

good luck either way

Wasn't on the tracks, it was at the corner of one of the intersections downtown.
