Wow, I was going to post a similar thread. Stupid default bike seat. I can only ride like 20 minutes at a time because it hurts.

that is special made to keep you going.
they also made this seat since there is a higher than average level of impotence in serious bike riders that comes from spending a lot of time pressing on the nerve clusters that meet down there.
if you get serious, get one of these.

get one of these before you can't get it up any more... :p

One BIG factor in saddle comyfness (not a REAL word BTW:) is height.

If your saddle is too low it WILL hurt your butt, also your knees will ache and you will tire quickly.

When on the saddle with the cranks at the bottom of the stroke you should have a VERY SLIGHT bend in your knee. Another way to tell if it's right is put JUST your heel on the pedal, your leg should be straight, then when you move your foot forward with the ball of your foot over the middle of the pedal (Where your foot SHOULD be) you will have a slight bend!
If your butt moves side to side while pedaling, your saddle is too high. Not good either.
Oh yeah one more thing.

Pic's of your sore bum please!!! ;) LOL

Find a woman's bike seat, because of the way women's hips are made (something about being wider to be able to pass babies), you need a different seat than a guy, wider, better support, less discomfort:D

Pfft, that's nothing. Last time I went biking, my left nut was so inflamed I had to try to make sure the bike didn't lean to the left. And then WALKING with a sore nut...:Q

all good advice on shorts & better seats, but if the bike doesn't fit right, you're still going to be hurting. Somebody above mentioned seat height, the other important bit is top tube distance. A rough rule of thumb ... if you put your elbow on the nose of the saddle, your fingers should just about touch the handlebars. And your handlebars should be about level with the seat, maybe a bit lower. If your top tube distance is to short and/or handlebars to high, you end up to upright, and all your weight is on your butt instead of balanced between your butt and your hands. And you can't rise out of the saddle as easily to absorb bumps etc. which contributes as well.

you can avoid sore nuts and sore asses by not actually sitting on the seat during the ride. You get a better work out when you ride with your ass above the seat using the seat periodically as a rest. Thats how I learned to competitively mountain bike.

Edit: And I dont mean "standing" on the bike.

why don't you get one of those wide biking seats? you should be able to fit your entire bum on the seat and ride until your legs turn into jelly.

i don't understand this? do you mean stand on the pedals, and keep your butt off of the seat?

You keep your butt light on the seat, so you aren't actually putting a lot of your weight on the seat...
You use your thighs more when you ride this way... it gives you more control over the bike. It's a combination of thighs and upper body, really... you'll want gloves (gel filled are good) for your hands because they are carrying a lot of weight on the front end. Ever do tricks on a bike, like bunny hops? It's kind of the same thing, using your arms and legs and keeping your torso up high.

I miss going for regular rides. I was pretty good for a girl. :p

I knew that was going to happen so I bought a $200 return at Kmart for $50. It's an alloy of the finest Chinese steel, but it has forks, fat tires, and a rear suspension. I also bought a fat 35 dollar gel seat 70% of the value of my bike. :D Of course it still hurts my behind, but things have improved with time.

What really surprises me is that nobody's asked you for dibs on your old seat. That's the nerdy types usual introduction to women according to what I'm told. I'd bet half these guys nose what I mean. :D

Seat examples.

I use a seat like the second one down on the left on that site. It is designed for not crushing the neruovascular bundle for guys "stuff", and it works like a champ. You should think about a seat like the far bottom right, a "double stuff" seat.

:D

okay, then we are definately talking about the same thing. I normally ride like this also, and i use the seat as a rest when cruising down hills.

then again, since i started smoking again, my bike has been locked up in the shed.:(

<--surprised no one's volunteered to be the seat yet.

Serious:

Cheap: If everythings adjusted for height and you have an acceptable seat, Do as said above, wait a few days (for bum not to be sore) and ride again. Repeat. Usually by the third ride it's not a problem anymore.

I remember my first ride... off road... you have my sympathy.

Expensive: You could get a recumbent bike, but, that's a whole other discussion. :D

If you are about to ask: What is a recumbent bike?

If you're not used to riding, it will hurt. That will go away the more you ride.

When that happens you call time out and separate them with your seat.
