So this isnt the first time Ive gotten things stolen such as bikes or scooters but this last bicycle I got stolen was in front of my place of work and locked with what I thought to be a pretty good lock. So besides trying to find a more secure location to keep my bike what are some locks that are recommended against thieves? Is there such thing as a foolproof lock or am I just dreaming?

If by foolproof you mean guaranteed to never have a bike stolen, no such thing exists. If I biked to work I'd be inclined to bring my bike into my office unless there were cameras pointed at the locking area. Something to prove that it was stolen at least so that I could file an insurance claim, if it was worth it.

Maybe get a junkier bike. If you don't need quality, don't buy it. If you're only riding a couple miles, a thrift shop special will work.

Bike locks can be freezed, smashed like a Terminator, and bike gone under 1 minute. So there is no such thing as fullproof lock.
I would never leave a bike, worth more than $100, unattended.
Sorry for the loss. Bike thieves suck

I've never heard of bike thieves using liquid nitrogen to steal bikes, do you have a link?

Sorry to hear about your bike. Bike thieves suck. Had my bike stolen from my apartment building in my senior year of college - someone just went into the de facto bike room and broke the object my bike was attached to - took the bike including the locks.

I guess your place of work doesn't let you bring the bike inside? Maybe you could ask them about putting a rack just inside the entrance door or maybe putting some cameras up. If you need a new lock, you get a Skunklock to at least fight back against thieves: http://skunklock.com/

I use a yellow Kryptonite u-lock, which are supposedly more robust than the orange ones. And if I know I have to be somewhere where my bike will be outside, unattended, I will often also carry a heavy Kryptonite chain lock. But these days, I rarely use my bike for transit, since I'm just afraid of it getting stolen, even with the locks.

Also remember with the U-locks, it's also important to leave as little space as possible in them to keep people from stuffing a jack inside it or using the bike as a lever to help break it.

I doubt they carry around liquid nitrogen. However, you could freeze locks by using canned air. Or they'll just use a power tool to cut through the lock.

You should take it up with your employer to provide better security for bikes. Better bike racks, racks placed in more trafficked areas, security cameras pointed at the bike rack, etc. Better yet, an indoor area for bikes, or allowing them to be brought into your office.

I was actually looking for another type of movie. If you know the lock, and if you know where to hit it, in which direction, you can actually slam quite a few locks open. Just with a little bang on the right spot. That's a lot easier than using a spraycan to freeze the lock. I'm not sure if those locks are still sold. I suspect they are.

Comma makes some good stuff.

Also the Punctuation brand is always a good choice.

First of all, master locks just horrendously suck against virtually any sort of attack in general. Secondly, I'd like to see that done with a bike lock that was installed correctly and he didn't have the lock sitting on a concrete floor to bang it against. Looked hard enough even with the backing of the concrete floor and aren't those the locks that can be defeated with a pen cap?

no lock is foolproof. better locks will just make it take longer to steal, so hopefully the bike thief will look for a less secure bike.

that being said, I use the Pitlock system to secure my wheels, seat and fork. Of all the locking skewer systems Pitlocks are the best. I did my research thoroughly on that subject. this way I can just carry a small but robust U-lock for my top tube while all the removable parts are safe. I like smaller U-locks cause I can carry them in my rear pocket and not have to carry a bag with me. You don't want to use your u-lock on the lower part of your bike as your thief can now get leverage to pop it.

i ride in NYC, mostly during daylight, and lock my bike up and have left it unattended for short periods of time like an hour here or there and not worried much. If you have to leave your bike locked up and unattended for long periods of time in a high theft area, you might just want to get a beater.
