My biggest regret is probably not going into the military

People in the military take the same risks for much, much less. Kudos to them.
I might qualify for the job if I got back into shape, but I would never consider it. Money isn't everything.

What your forgetting, most security personel are issued weapons. While I might very well get killed, by God it wont be by beheading on TV!

Some things are more important than money, and being in my non-hostile native soil is one of those things.

Not for me, strangely enough.

don't you have a wife and 3 kids? or am i thinking of another devil avatar user?

personally, i don't feel that amount of money is worth the risk.

Yes. But most contracts are 3 months in duration. And if your pullin in less the 10 GRAND a month they say your getting screwed. In 1 year I could be completely debt free. And I'm confident enough in my limited skills to delude myself into thinking I have a good chance of making it out.
Its a sacrafice. Most give up 40 hours a week for 30 years to be with the family. I'll give up 4 years (extended a little with vacations) to just damned near never have to work again.

Not sure what world you're living in, but even $150k/yr for 4 years shouldn't even come close to giving you complete financial independent. Even if it were tax free and you didn't spend a dime, there's simply no way unless you live exceptionally parsimoniously.

Easy to say from an archair computer geek when in reality if faced with it he'd curl up in the fetal position.

I find it weird how so many people are afraid of doing contract work b/c of the beheadings. That's what, a total of 6-7 US contract workers out of several thousand? You're as likely to die in the states in a robbery as you are getting beheaded. I'd go down fighting

The irony is assuming I havent been involved in gunplay before. You think the Kansas City ghetto is fvcking easy? Have YOU ever stared down the barrel of a goddamned Glock, and the guy on the other end just got out of prison and is jacking you so he has some cash? I doubt it. Has YOUR friend ever been shot in the back of the head, and had it come out of his neck? Most likely not. Have YOU ever had the Swat team knock down the door of your friends house, and come runnin in 13 deep with M16's and shotguns looking for drugs? Betchya a dollar you havent.

I'm not proud with my past, but not ashamed. I dont normally discuss it, because, well, its not the high point of my life so to speak. But dont think because I have a college education and a good job now that I havent done dirty in the past my friend.

I would say that nobody knows exactly what they would do in that situation, until they are faced with it.

However, it would certainly be better than the likely alternative of torture, being held for political ransom, and being killed anyway.

With all due respect to your experiences in the past, I don't think living in the ghetto is quite the same thing as war. That guy who was jacking you was looking for cash. You know what the guys you'll be facing in a firefight are trying to do? Kill you. Not rob you, not mug you, kill you. If they don't kill you, they're probably going to torture and behead you. Imagine that SWAT team busting in SHOOTING at you and I think you might get a better idea.

You're experiences may have been bad...but not bad enough.

I've been in combat. What you see is partially true. It was the scariest thing I have ever experienced, and I don't wish it on anyone. But some people stand up and thrive in that situation even though they are terrified.

I'm just sayin, when the shyte gets hot I know I can handle myself. I also know a keyboard commando like yourself couldnt. You'd most likely piss yourself then do just as you said, and curl up in the fetal position.

It has nothing to do with being a tough guy badass. It has to do with me knowing myself after having been in some bad situations. Most little asstards on the internet think life is all fun and games and no one has had a tough time of it. Most think everyone is just some geek playing CS thinking he's a cool tough guy badass. Thats not always the case with every person posting online.

Generally your right. But I'll tell ya what both scenarios have in common. Alot of looking over your back. 😉

Hell, I might very well piss myself and curl up in the fetal position and suck my thumb. i dont KNOW for sure. God knows a pistol isnt a RPG. Being shot at with a rinky dink 200 dollar pistol is damned unnerving enough.
But, theres only one way to really find out now isnt there? 😉

Yes. You will never know how you will react until you are in the situation. I've seen big, strong, tough guys cowering in fear and little wimpy, scrawny guys raising hell.

Besides people, this post isnt about whether I'm King Kong, Superman or Courage the Cowardly Dog.
This is about security consultant jobs in hot spots around the world.

Maybe not, but a lot of e-badass people ARE geeks playing CS thinking they are cool tough guy badasses. Guess I'm jaded 😉

Yeah, there were offers for Police Officers to go over there & earn $100,000+. That's much more than you could earn as a P.O. here in the US.

In an effort to get this thread back on track...after I helped de-rail it (ahem, nothing to see here folks, move along...) 😉

I'm unclear on what "security consultants" do that military people can't. I know it's dangerous, but people actually in the military are in just as much danger and get paid a hell of a lot less. It sounds like a pretty sweet deal compared to staying in the serivce, but I'm not quite sure why the government will pay them so much.

It isn't that the military can't but thier just aren't enough forces to go around trained for that type of work or able to do it.

The US military just does not have the available forces to protect every contractor in the country or other government agencices outside of the secure FOBS. In addition agencies such as the CPA now state PCO are protected by private contractors. Why? Because they can't get enough DSS agents to come over here, live in these conditions, and be away from thier families. Even high ranking military officers that come visit the various commands here often have private security for close protection.
