dear ATOT, my bicep gets a stabbing pain if i extend my arm straight in front of me and point it down about 45 degrees. or if i start it pointing down and lift it up in front of me.

it has been doing this for a month or two but is getting worse.

should i see a doctor? or should i try icing and abusing painkillers (ibuprofen) for a while?

Sounds like a nerve issue, most likely in your shoulder. Unfortunately drugs probably won't help it and a doctor might not either. Recommend a good deep tissue massage & maybe some chiro work which has been hit or miss for me on pinched nerves.

Did you do anything before the pain started?

PS - I suspect it's full blown AIDS.

not really. only thing i can think of is carrying a 30 pound kid around a park for 2 hours with that arm. and maybe throwing a ball kind of hard a few times.

PS i should have known! D:

I think the strain of holding that kid did it. Try ibuprofen for a few days. If you don't see any improvement, you may have ripped something - see a doctor.

Is your arm supinated (palm up) or pronated (palm down) when you have the pain and your arm is at that angle?

i hadn't thought to try that - it hurts when my palm is down

actually, i JUST remembered when it started hurting! a couple months ago i tripped while going up some stairs at work, and fell down with that arm extended to stop my fall.

it hurt like crazy that day but the pain went away after that week. but now it seems the pain is coming back.

If you are lucky, no damage that requires surgery. Your PCP, after running up the bill with x-rays or a cat scan or mri, will probably refer you to either a specialist doctor who handles sports related injuries, or maybe to a physical therapist. You'd be surprised how much this can really help.

Where does it hurt- toward the elbow, toward the shoulder, or in the middle?

my carpel tunnel problems seem to be worst when pointing my thumb down and my arm is straight... do you get any weird tingling/pins and needles feelings? or does it go straight from "ok" to "pain" with no middle ground?

You sure it's actually the biceps? That sounds pretty close to where the deltoid attaches.

Take a look at these tests: http://physicaltherapyweb.com/shoulder-orthopedic-tests/

A quickie version: http://breakingmuscle.com/strength-conditioning/how-to-self-diagnose-your-shoulder-pain

GO EASY when doing the tests. And get to a doctor if you can.

Agreed, that doesn't sound like the bicep, OP. I would def check with the doctor, see if you can get a referral to a specialist. That's what I would do, anyway.

Yes you should see a doctor. Just don't get confused and start icing and abusing your doctor and you should be ok.
