because everyone gets accepted to medical schools in Romania and the program is only 4 years with no college education.

I told her she is an idiot.

I have cousins who went to Pakistan because they could get into dental school there. Same reasoning.

I bet he'll most likely find out that his dental licence isn't valid when he comes back.

All he has to do is take a test in the U.S and he'll be certified if he passes it.

Your cousins are from Pakistan. Going to Pakistan for them is like a mini vacation.

This girl is not from Romania and knows nobody there.

Didn't know it was that simple.

By the way, I had a Romanian guy try to scam me recently..

He approached me in a parking lot with a small child.. he was wearing an expensive leather jacket with what looked like a suit underneath and had a nice watch and said "I am from Romania, I can't speak good English, we need money to get back home"... (the next day some people told me he was pulling a different scam in a grocery store about 2 months earlier.)

Why doesn't she go to one of the schools in Central America which are designed for students who can't get into US medical schools?  As far as doing it in four years, I doubt she'll be able to pass the tests.  It's not just one exam, it's three...

My neighbor's son is attending med school in the Ukraine right now, and plans to do the same thing.

uh, and what's your problem with her going? it's not as if you're any type of significant other...

maybe she realized what with the difficulty the current graduating classes are facing with medical school admission, she'd probably be halfway through a degree in Romania by the time she got into one in the states.

I got lucky. 19 out of 20 applicants I personally know didn't, and better than half were at least as qualified as me. Most of them are now being forced to settle for 50k jobs that will barely cover the rent and the interest on their student loans, but hey- that's life. They'll keep trying each and every upcoming semester, along with other hapless members of the classes of '02-'06 that couldn't squeeze their way into a decent med program.

Romania, huh? I would done aus/nz before going that deep if i hadn't gotten accepted here, but that's just me.

What's funny is my wife is in med school with two Romanian women in the US. Granted, they both moved to the US for a reason other than med school but it's still entertaining to me.

You people are morons and talk out of your asses. Seriously, most of you can't even find Romania on the map... why bother dissing it?

Among Eastern European countries, the Romanian medical schools (state-owned, NOT private) are the best. They really emphasize a lot of studying, they teach you hands-on techniques which allow you to face virtually any medical situation, and once you graduate you'll be able to pass any exams in any Western country (not to mention that, thanks to international agreements, more and more places recognize your diplomas directly). PLUS - the country will be part of the European Union as of January 2007... living and studying there is cheap, and you're two hours (by plane) away from Paris, London or Rome.

I had a cousin from Germany who did exactly this (her parents were Romanian emigrés) and now she's fine and well, working at a hospital in Aachen...

*edit* Forgot to add: it's 4 years of study without prior college degree required, BUT the classes are 6-8 hours every day, 5 days a week, and most of them have a mandatory minimum 51% class attendance required, otherwise you're automatically flunked. They really take studying seriously.

If she plans to come back to the states, she'll probably find it easier if she does a 5th pathway programs in central america or the caribean.

If she plans on staying in Europe it might not be a bad idea though, I've been looking into similar programs but not in Romania.

Although I know a few docs who went to medical school outside of the US and some of them are good doctors, many do not pass the National exam to be licenced in the US and some school esp those in the former soviet union do not adequately prepare you for the test let alone the practice of Medicine.

In Romania I thought they speak English? & no she doesn't speak Romanian.

Part of the program is to know English. You have to take an English exam.

If she hasn't applied at least two or three times now and is considering that, she's a moron. And even if she has, she's a moron. Just tell her to work on her weakness, GPA, MCAT, research or whatever and try again next year.

51% mandatory class attendance is taking it academics seriously?
