My beloved X24400 finally time to go

More specifically the Hard Drive died. I could obviously just replace the HD. But I think its time to move on. I Must say this is easily the best purchase I ever made. It STILL runs most games ok including SKYRIM although obviously it was on its last gaming leg.

Anyway, reason for my post here is I have been out of the hardware loop for so long I am a little out of touch with what is the good bang for the buck these days. Also, I work remotely from home about once a week so I don't have time to mess around. While I would prefer to piece meal and build my own rig, I need a quicker solution - without being too hasty and wasting money.

Ok, time to follow the rules:

1. My PC will be used for games, and working remotely. The work part isn't a big deal, I log in with Barracuda through the browser to access my Desktop at work. Gaming is more important. I am definitely not the kind of person who rushes to buy crisis 2 and obsesses about framerates. Considering I am upgrading from the x24400/geforce 8800gt I figure a middle of the road PC will be a significant upgrade.

2. Thinking $1000-$1200 is acceptable. If I find myself going a little higher, it is not going to break the bank.

3. Buying in the USA.

4. For brand preference definitely NVIDIA For GFX. In the past I have prefered AMD for processor and Asus for motherboard. But I am not strictly opposed here. I want my PC to run cool and silent though, that's big for me - without going watercooled ( unless someone can convince to do watercool ...just uneasy about it hehe ). I don't want to buy heatsink/fan that sound like a jetplane to give me a couple degrees.

5. Not intending on re-using any parts due to time constraints. Figure I could fix or bastardize old rig if I felt like it afterwords. So looking for pre-built this time.

6. I have not read up on ANY threads on this in a long time.

7. No overclocking

8. 1680x1050 resolution

9. Looking to buy pre-built rig in next week. New egg or maybe cyberpower come to mind but again, I haven't researched this in a while.

10. Some other things.. I will need copy of Windows 7 ( yep... been on xp lol ). Would like to consider a solid state drive but that might kill my price range. Also.. I said I wasn't going to re-use parts however if it is even worth it I could re-use my Soundblaster x-fi card. Ram should be cheap....8 gig maybe?

That's all, let the recommendations begin!

Are you near a Micro Center? They will put together a custom system for you, and some of their prices (CPU, mobo) are the best around.

Finding a reliable, fast pre-built isn't easy. This looks pretty good, but of course you could do better putting it together yourself, or buying from Micro Center.

Puget obsideon looks SWEET. I bounced over to their website and configured a nice i3 2100, 8gb ram, ATI 6850, 500gb hd, DVDRW, antec mini P180, scythe CPU cooler, antec true power 650w and win7 for a grand total of $1312.- before shipping. Their site says 12% off anything right now so.....

in comparison I did a quick newegg build ... and to make it interesting almost every significant component I picked is one notch better than Puget specs.

ASUS P8H67-M EVO
Intel Core i3-2105
SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6870
G.SKILL Sniper 8GB
Antec Performance One Series P183 V3
Antec EarthWatts Series EA-750
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 1tb
ASUS 24X DVD Burner
XIGMATEK LOKI 92mm CPU Cooler
Windows 7

Drumroll please.....$970.-before shipping

You sure you want a pre-built?

Let's meet in the middle. Get a Dell outlet XPS 8300 with i5 2300, 6GB of RAM, 1TB HDD, and Windows 7 for $469. Then add a $130 AR 6850 aftermarket and enjoy your $599 pre-built machine that can actually play games competently.

That would be sweet.....except i don't see any in stock at the dell outlet website. Only thing close is an 8100 for $839.-😵

Yeah, they one got snapped up pretty quick. I was hoping that you would have seen my post quickly enough. Oh well. 🙁

If you are not under huge time constriants, it won't hurt to trawl the Outlet a couple times a day looking for deals.
