I finally picked up the full version of crysis about two weeks ago, and I've been loving it. I don't get time to play every day, but I've invested several hours into it and I think I'm going to play it again and again.
I was worried that my system was going to hold me back on enjoying the game as much as I could. For that reason I've procrastinated on buying it, thinking that maybe I'd have a chance to upgrade my GPU/CPU before giving in. (Currently 8800gts 640 + 2.5ghz s939 X2 opteron, dx9) I've been totally shocked from the beginning though, as the full version looks way better than the demo and the graphics are gorgeous and totally immersive. I haven't messed with my graphics settings since I installed it, where I decided to give it a try with 2xAA, textures and shaders on high, shadows on low, and everything else on medium. I guess I haven't felt the need, and I've been too eager to play when I get my opportunities to spend any more time trying to squeeze more eye candy out. Very soon I'm going to start messing with them some more using the built-in benchmark tool.
My first question has to do with day/night cycle: Does the time of day pass independent of the story-line? If there's a big camp full of KPA that I don't want to attack in broad daylight, is it possible to camp out in the bushes until dusk?
Second, I'm not totally clear on the stealth aspects of the gameplay. Is there a sure-fire way to take out an enemy without being detected? Seems like if I grab them, punch them, or shoot them with a silencer, any nearby guards are going to notice and get plenty pissed about it. I can tell that this is mitigated by tactics - like how a single silenced head-shot is less likely to be detected than a 20 round burst, but again, only when there's no other guards within sight. Anybody have any tactical suggestions? I'd like to try my next run through as stealthily as possible - slipping past patrols and so on without being detected. I also read somewhere that this approach can change how guards in subsequent stages will behave. Comments? Suggestions?
Also, how adept are you guys at non-shooting combat? Seems like there is quite a bit of leeway for those who wish to punch-out or throw stuff at bad guys - but like I said above, I find that after I punch out the first guy I'm in the middle of a sh!tstorm that I have to shoot my way out of. If you pick up large objects or even KPA in one of these firefights, will they work as a shield from gunfire? I'd like to really develop this part of the gameplay if it's something that can be really useful, as opposed to just gimmicky.
Last question, re: taking down helicopters. I know there's a sweet-spot on the tail where a single rocket will take it down, but I haven't mastered that. Do you want to hit it directly on the rotor thingy, or what? How does small-arms fire work in that area? Any way to take one down without explosives?
OK, that's it. Flame on.
