Got showered with stones on the highway from a pick up truck carrying screenings a couple weeks back. Lots of stone chip damage on all the panels except the trunk and rear bumper.

How ironic - your car is headed for the garage, and this thread is headed for the garage...forum. :) -Anandtech Moderator DrPizza

Aww that sucks. I know if that happened to my car I wouldn't give a crap. I own a 2001 Ford Focus so I would actually hope that a big boulder would just fall on it without me inside of course. Did you make the guy from with the pickup truck pay?

I have an S-10 and I wish it would get destroyed. Its got full coverage and I'd like a small hybrid sedan. I havent really like the thing for a long time and now that GM is all messed up I damn sure dont want it.

As it is I only do the required maintenence like oil changes and fixing the stuff on the safety inspection. One of those stupid little hub caps fell off and I dont feel like replacing it for 30 bucks.

A pic before it got lost.

Stupid little round thing costs 30 dollars, plus shipping.
Also, I ripped off the lower plastic part of the bumper, below the chrome. It was shredded after my last adventure anyway and now I have more clearance. Mounted the license plate directly to the chrome.
It could also use a detailing job and the Rhino-lining equivelant I had put on the undercarriage is starting to flake off. But fuck it, this thing is a money pit and a gas guzzler anyway. I sure hope Toyota gets that hybrid pickup out the door soon.

Actually, I'm kind of impressed with the OP. So many people dont invest money into their cars these days other than what it takes to keep them running.

I got his plate and files a police report, but he wouldn't cough up the $4500+ to have it fixed. But my deductible was waived and my insurance rates will not be afftected due to his admission of guilt

What?? He admitted to it, but he wont pay? Why isn't your insurance fighting for him to pay?

How does that even work? I mean if I hated someone I could just say I happened to be behind them while driving and they kicked up a rock and dented my fender... file a police report and they're forced to pay?

If he is admitting guilt I'm sure his insurance is paying for it.

Why would he (the other guy) pay out of pocket that is what insurance is for.

Not saying that the other guy woudl pay out of pocket, but that guys insurance should cover it imo...

Kicking up a rock from the road is not the same as having rocks fall out of the back of your vehicle and damage someone else's vehicle.

Not sure exactly what will happen to him or his insurance, but in Ontario we have No Fault Insurance laws. I don't really know the details of what happens behind the scenes.

You will have to wait 2 weeks for pics, im am already driving my rental...a Mitsubishi Galant. I was supposed to get a Lancer, but apparently there is a recall on the brake system.

14 days for what should be just some road rash...what did you do follow the truck intentionally?

Pics would be nice.

I wouldn't think it would take 14 days unless they had to order some new parts. I had to get a new hood on my SUV after a wicked hail storm, and it took about 10 days to take it in. We just waited until the part was in before dropping off our vehicle.

Yes...I followed him intentionally because we all know that replacing the factory paint job on an otherwise mint condition vehicle is the best thing to do.

It's mostly the labour involved in removing all the accessories (handles, lights, mirrors, glass, emblems) to do the job properly. Each panel has significant stone chip damage excluding trunk lid and rear bumper.

I just don't understand how EVERY panel could be damaged this significantly.

Any closeup pics of before your ordeal?

Honestly, you should go to a junkyard. That generation s10 is pretty common, so you should definitely be able to find the parts for much cheaper. If I had that vehicle, I'd just drive it until it died. Knowing the way the s10 is built, that could be a while. Also, why the hate on for GM? I can see people being skittish about buying a new vehicle considering what is going on but that really shouldn't affect those that are out of warranty.

Oh, and MovingTarget's old s10 (still running)

At first, I was thinking you were following too closely, but then I realized that small stones like that might bounce up a foot or so, and with greatly diminished velocity as they do so, resulting in you colliding with them with a difference in speed sufficient to do the damage you suggested.

But, for so much damage? Did you drive along for several minutes muttering to yourself "that idiot should have covered the load", not realizing it was damaging your vehicle?

And, for the sake of comparison, I've passed many salt trucks in the winter, spraying rock salt all over the place. Some of those pieces are large pebble sized. Never noticed a bit of damage though. But, unless I was passing the truck, or following too closely, I can't recall many (if any) of those pieces hitting my vehicle. AND, those pieces are deliberately projected backwards & away from the vehicle, (the thing that spins & distributes the rock salt all over the road) vs. just passively falling off. Of course, from the bed of a pickup, they're in the air slightly longer, because they're falling from slightly higher up.

I was on a busy 3 lane highway with him passing me in the left lane. As soon as he passed me is when I noticed the stones pouring out of his bed and I got into the right lane as soon as I could with stones still bouncing off the drivers side panels. I could not slow down too much as I would have been obstructing the flow of traffic. As soon as I could I passed him on the right and got in front of him in the left lane....me must have thought I was trying to race him as he passed me on the right side this time causing the passenger side damage.

Shortly after that the highway went to 5 lanes so I passed again as far away as possible.....and you'll never guess what he did, yup, passed me again. I couldn't go too fast as we have very strict speeding laws up here (50km/h = loss of license for 7 days and vehicle seizure for 7 days).

This went on for a good 5-6 kilometers.

Close-up pics of non-damaged body panels? Picture the panels of a brand new car, and that's what i had.

If you indeed cared so much about the car you'd have had before pics.

I hope this isn't an insurance scam.

So this guy basically played cat and mouse with your for miles and you didn't think to just pull over or simply slow the fuck down and let him get some distance from you.

Makes no sense.
