ok folks listen to my tale and see if you can weigh in please.

I have an Asus AV133 ver 1.05 with a duron 700, and pretty standard other stuff, maxtor HS, raden video card etc...

I tried to install Windows 2000 on it and no matter what happened, when it started copying files, it would give me multiple error messages that the a few of the files did not copy correctly, compsui.dll and some others. I would retry all day, but they would not copy correctly.

I had a bunch of extra gear from 2 other systems, so I tried a different cd rom drive thinking it may be a problem reading the W2k cd, and I tried different harddrive, no help, it kept giving me the same crap.

So, I tried installing W2K on other systems from the same cd, and and it worked fine on both of em.

So, I there's something about my duron 700 AMD AV133 system that is causing these files to copy incorrectly, and it's not the CD rom drive, w2k cd, or HD!!!!

I had done all this with the 1.04 bios. I then upgraded to the latest bios that is dated june 6 2001, and the problems copying the files mostly went away. The only file that it gave me an error message on was shell32.dll. I was able to bypass that error messaage, and w2k installed successfully, and seems to work fine. I checked the shell32.dll in my winnt/system32 folder and it is a file that is over 2 megabytes and everything seems to be running fine, so my question is, WTF is going on with installing W2K on this computer, and has anyone else had similar problems.

PS. I have a P3V4X with P3-800 on another system, and is is a much more stable system, and just seems to run better, allthough I have no complaints about the Duron 700 system other than the W2K install thing, and sometimes when I restart, it just dies and I have to manually push the restart button.

PSS. what is the web site address for that asus mobo forum, I forgot it.

Thanks gang, LATA

If your using the promise controller make sure you installed the promise drivers at the beginning of setup, also since you got it to install make sure you install the latest VIA 4 in 1 drivers.

Dulanic (REF fan I see) all this stuff is happening during the initial "dos like" W2K install process before it ever boots into the windows GUI. there is nothing to be done about promise drivers, or via drivers at that point.

Someone who reads good books I see :) I'm really suprised anyone ever caught that since Brother Dulanic was not exactly a big leading character. As for Win2k yes you can install the drivers before setup... At the beginning of setup Windows 2000 will say at the bottom of the screen "Press F6 to install SCSI/RAID Drivers" so you press F6 and install the Promise drivers... you are right about the VIA 4 in 1 tho, I was just saying make sure you update them after setup.

To install the Promise Drivers during setup make sure you have the drivers on a disk. Once you press F6 (a min or 2 later) it will ask for the floppy with the Promise drivers on it.

aww, cool, thanks for the tip Dulanic, I may decide to switch to NTFS instead of Fat32, and I'll try that if I ever need to reinstall again.

as for Feist, is it just me, or has everything he's put out since Rise of a Merchant Prince sucked. I thought Merchant Prince was great, and the books after that (especially Shards of a Broke Crown) totally SUCKED!@

I'll still buy his books though. He's a real sell out after that lame trilogy based on the comptuer games. they were really weak.
