My Auto-X Run

A short video of my third run in today's auto-x, filmed on an old Nikon Coolpix camera. Which promptly crapped out after that so I didn't get to film any of my better runs 🙁

My runs were as follows (don't care about milliseconds at this point cos I'm not good enough for it to matter).

Run 1 : 78s (more like a joy ride, getting to learn the course)
Run 2 : 72s
Run 3 : 69s
Run 4 : 67s
Run 5 : 66s (lost control, but recovered. However lost time because of that. Time should have been better)

After run 2, I asked one of the Pros to drive my car, while I rode passenger. That's when I realized I was not looking far enough ahead to set the car up for the next obstacle. Oh, and he put up a time of ~60s, pushing about 8/10 of his abilities. Clearly, I have a long way to go 😛

I'm pretty sure my car is too fat and slow to even attempt that course. Or maybe thats just me...

Anyway, Good Job!

Seems many are setup for cars with narrow and short wheel bases like the Miata.

Some C3 Corvette owners tried to run some events like this but they were slow compared to cars they could tear up on a larger open track or even drag racing.

I don't think c3 vettes are exactly great handlers compared to most modern sporty cars unless modified.

I don't know how most groups do it but our local group rotates who designs the coarses between a bunch of people. The big high HP guys tend to make more a open coarse while the little lower power guys tend to go for the tighter designs. And some groups are just too safety cautions and want to keep speeds down.

Were you in first gear the whole time? The layout seemed overly tight.

I was in 2nd gear after the first set of slaloms. The course was intentionally designed to be slow and tight cos we were expecting rain half way through the session. Otherwise, we would have had a more loose and faster course, like we normally do.

Yeah. This one was a bit mild, compared to some of the wacky ones our veteran club members have designed in the past.

You're right though. Doing it on a run way course does limit the kind of course you can have.

theres always limits.

at least you don't worry about light poles, garbage cans, and curbs.

still fun

Auto X is fun as heck

Down in South Florida I like the one done on the run way better than the parking lot.

Last one I did the First two runs of four were ok, but last two were in "Very Wet" it was interesting. Thank god I worked before it rained, you could not even see the first station! lol

Sweet. Getting a little behind in those slaloms, but I assume you made that better in your faster runs.

What tires are you on?

Running Direzza ZIIs 195/50R-15s on 15x7 C1Ms

I had to drop tire pressure to 22psi warm to make sure I was using a good amount of the contact patch... In my last auto-x a few months ago, I was running 26psi warm and found it was wearing more in the middle, and not close enough to the edge of the sidewall.

Also, disconnected the rear sway bar this time. Definitely helped reduce oversteer.

Ah, yeah, that's right.

You've got the FM Stage 2 (.5?) suspension kit too, right?

How're you liking it?

I like it a lot. Running it on FM's recommended setting, it handles like it's a on rails on the street. Then again, my only frame of reference was OEM suspension with 150k miles on it. 😛

I kinda wish I'd sprung for the V-Maxxs though. At least the install would have been quicker/easier.
