Whenever she tries to log on it says "no dial tone" (yup, she has dial-up). This is happening after I reformatted her HDD, and installed windows XP on it. I was able to get the internet in our house, of course, we have DSL. She said that when she first bought the computer she had problems like this and she called the company and they gave her "a bunch of codes" to put in to make it work . She said that they told her that her modem was too fast for the internet ? Windows XP detects the modem and says "this device is funcioning properly" so I don't know what it could be. Do you guys have any clue?

Run the modem self-test in Device Manager. Take the PC to a friend's house and retest. This will usually isolate a problem with her telephone line. If problem persists, then purchase a cheap PCI modem for $20.

It's a laptop though. She's apparently on the phone right now (probably with the internet company's tech support) so I can't call her and tell her to do that. She lives in washington state and I'm over here in pennsylvania so I can't really just take it to a friends house, and anyway, all my friends have DSL too. She shipped it to me for me to install windows XP.

Laptop? OK - when you reformatted, etc., you propbably destroyed the modem drivers. Reinstall them from the original OEM disk/CD. Or - download them from the OEM.
