My Asus K8V powers down my HDD twice?

Is it normal for my Asus K8V to power up my HDD on boot (WD 40 gig 7200rpm ATA100) , then show the POST screen, then in the promise raid controller detection screen (which is a waste of time because I don't have raid and I even told it IDE-only in the BIOS) it powers down my hdd, then after the promise raid detection screen it powers it back up again?

Why does it turn my hdd on and off like that? It seems like it might cause wear and tear to my drive.
