Once manufacturing is dead in Michigan, the UAW will virtually cease to exist. Our business climate is hostile to business. Manufacturing will not return because our leaders will hopefully have learned that it's not the type of business we need in this state. We'll have an additional decade of pure misery on top of the 6 to 8 years of hell we've been going through. U.S.-based companies have 105 assembly and component plants in 20 states, including California, Texas, Louisiana and Maryland so there's going to be ample misery to spread around.

The UAW will be effectively castrated. It should make many of you very, very happy.

Then the race to the bottom will intensify. With the specter of unionization effectively eliminated, employers across the nation, pressured by wall street and stockholders, will begin to whittle away at pay and benefits. There's always someone in the world willing to do it cheaper.

Most importantly you union bashers are going to have to find another whipping boy.

The Dem's hold the cards, right to work is only a dream at this point.

From what I can tell the race to the bottom starts in Union mandated Michigan. So excuse me while your fear mongering falls on deaf ears.

The rest of your post is amusing considering about 8% of non-govt workers are unionized. Why havent the other 92% of workers been raked over the coals yet? Think that last 8% is holding up the show or something?
So you're scared? Good, you should be.

Of course there were tax incentives, but overall costs for these companies will be less.

Employees at the Nissan manufacturing plant in Smyrna, TN have repeatedly rejected joining the UAW.

I wonder why...

You ignore the fact that non-unionized automakers in the US pay their employees at a higher rate to discourage unionization. Once those unions are gone, the incentive is gone.

Real wages have dropped in the US since 1973. Employers are dropping health coverage, have switched from defined benefit plans to 401k's...families now need 2 breadwinners...show some intellectual honesty.

Forced unionization means comparative disadvantage compared to southern states - that's why no one is opening new plants in michigan.

Why would MI be inherently bad place for business?

southern states are also subsidizing those factories.

Ding! (Close enough anyway...)

Really, coming to the South has something to do with anti-union sentiment, but the business climate here is such that the southern states are giving away some pretty big tax breaks and incentives packages to attract those factories. Cheap land, abundant resources, cheap(er) labor, and easy access to South America via the ports of New Orleans, Mobile, Pensacola, etc. are all good reasons to locate to the South.

The push for unions in these areas isn't as strong simply because the pay the workers receive is "worth" more, dollar for dollar due to the lower cost of living. So while in absolute terms they don't get as much as their union counterparts up north, their standard of living is probably somewhat close. If there were separate unions for Southern auto workers, their demands would probably be much lighter to achieve the same standard of living.

And exactly what does any of what you just spewed have to do with Unions? You think pointing out issues within our markets means a union would have fixed it? The same thing is happening within the Union shops are a much more alarming rate.

And take some of your own medicine. If the UAW collapses what makes you think another entity wont rise from the ashes to represent those workers in foreign auto plants?

Are you saying that corporations ARENT to blame for this current financial crisis?

they don't have sole blame, but they certainly are a key component

The better alternative is to repeal all RTW laws nationwide.

The workers should choose whether or not they want to keep out freeloaders from enjoying the benefits of their union.

Dont RTW states have a clause where if you're not in the union, you have to give the dues to charity to fix the freeloader problem?

Or just get paid less ?

The solution to a company being non-competitive isn't to increase costs on its competitors. All you've done then is reward the non-competitive company for being slow/lazy/inefficient.

It's not slow, lazy, or inefficient to reward treating employees well, and exhibiting compassion. It is wretched and abysmal, however, to reward greed.

Not necessarily. In a RTW state you don't have to join a union and any REAL RTW state you do not have to contribute a dime. The problem is that the Unions want to be the only org in a company so they have to bargain for all. It's their choice to do so - they don't have to be exclusive(despite what the kool-aid drunk union thug apologists like Ferocious, barneyfife, and others claim).

IMO, in every state and company a person should be free to choose if they want to be in the union or not. If they choose not to - the union has no responsibility for them at all. THAT is what a real "right to work" situation would look like but the Unions want to prevent that for whatever reason.(likely because they would lose most of it's members)

Kill the fucking job bank already and make the members pay what everyone else in this country pays for their portion of employer provided health care coverage.

Being a "half" GM retiree, even I agree with your sentiments. My union did just that in 2002.

btw-half my pension is paid by GM. I worked for a division of GM that was sold in '94 to American Axle.

I'm born and raised in Dearborn and can begin to tell you how many people in my family work or have already retired from Ford. Most of them know this to be the truth. I have an Uncle who has been in the job bank for most of the past 8 years and even he agrees at the very least the bank has to go if the Big 3 is to have any shot at reviving themselves. The robots didn't take over the lines so I hope we see the end of the job bank ASAP.

at what point does a small business turn into a corporation

when stock is issued.

How many of the anti-business people work for private companies?
Most work for corporation that grew from a small company.
