Well, it all began with this.

Sorry for the weird pics, it's hard to aim a camera with your left hand and without looking in the visor.

Two days before this picture, I only had 3-4 stumps, and it was somewhat red around, like 1-2 square inch. I first thought it was some kind of chemical reaction from work, that some nasty stuff could have crawled it's way in my glove. Or even some kind of mass insect bites. It was somewhat scratchy, like a mosquito bite.

The nurse at work and the doctor I saw concluded it was a "contact dermatitis". I was prescribed some cortisone-based cream, and went home like this. A few hours after appying the cream, my wrist started swelling. (quite normal I thought, its the cream) But 2 days later it was swelled and red all around, I was like, uh-oh... One day when I woke up, some skin on my wrist looked very dry and flaky. Plus, the redness had spreaded...

You can see the red area up to my elbow where the infection has spreaded:

As you can see, i had to stop modding my computer because of that thing. ;)

Now it's a skin infection... Maybe my skin has weakened because of the dermatitis, or maybe I was poisoned since the begining... I have an IV hooked on my left wrist, and I carry the pump and antibiotic bag around in a waist bag. Plus, my whole arm is itching like hell, and I can't scratch it. :| Going crazy... My wrist and top of hand are swollen enough so it kinda hurts/pulls when I bend it. This makes basic computing (let alone gaming!), driving (stick shift), dressing (don't forget the damn IV tube) quite hard... Plus, I'm right-handed.

Worst thing is, I don't know where it comes from! I'll have to carry around my IV thingie for 2 more days, after that it'll be oral antibiotics... I can't wait to get through with that.

That looks very uncomfortable. I hope that your arm gets better very soon.

I've had a similar thing for about 7 years. The only difference is I have it on my feet instead of my arm. I've found that spraying it with lysol helps quite a bit. It keeps it from spreading at least. The only downside is it hurts like hell.

Not a good idea, Brian.

My friend's mother was an infection control nurse for the county where I grew up. There was one guy who had genital lice and thought spraying RAID on his nether regions would get rid of it. Well, the guy developed gangrene and his wang fell off. It was majorly gross.

Thanks all for the support, as well as the comments... Some actually made me laugh.

gnaw that sucker off before it spreads to your fun zone

Yeah, when it itches so bad, I'd love to sometimes.

Hope you get better dude. Oh and how do I avoid the skin eating disease you have?

Who is she? We need to know who to avoid.

Dunno where it comes from, though I have some guesses. Chemicals from work, or an ivy plant (not the poisonous kind, mind you) I got for my girlfriend. Though I think I bought the ivy after I noticed the first symptom, I don't quite remember...

Got an apointment Monday morning for an update, I hope I'll switch to pills...

Well, I just saw the doc, the infection (redness) looks under control, but I'm still under IV for 2 more days. :( But the tube's now on top of my arm instead of on my wrist, I gained some hand/finger mobility here. I should be able to test out the BF2 demo today. :D

The flaky white skin area has spreaded a bit, a part of the flakes have turned brown; doc says it's normal from the swelling and should go away after skin heals.

It's not that painful; I just don't have my full right wrist fully free to move, I feel the skin pull if I bend it too far. I can live with that. The itching is only part-time, and it's quite bad when it gets its mind to it. It's just like a damn mosquito bite spreaded on a greater area that won't go away. But most of time, it's fine, I barely feel the rash, even not at all.

To prevent the urge to scratch, the doc suggested some Benadryl, or another antihistaminic drug. But since it's not that bad and I got enough to spend with my $80CDN pouch of antibiotic (and another one coming soon), I'll just try not to go crazy when the itching comes back.

BTW, yeah, we got "free" Medicare up here in Canada, but it doesn't cover everything... Plus, the waiting times for emergencies as well as appointment with specialists are long enough. Health system is sick here.
