I made the mistake about 2 years ago in grilling some salmon for my roommate. I'm a pretty good cook and it was summer time so I broke out the grill and some beer and as a "special" meal, I made some salmon steaks. Good stuff if you ask me... HOWEVER, my roommate decided that he liked salmon after he tried it that day. Before then he thought the stuff was nasty. Now he makes cooks salmon on a george foreman grill about once a week. It smells like ASS on that stupid grill and smokes up the apartment. What should I do about this?

Rub the fish with some lemon juice about 10 minutes before cooking it. It cuts down on the smell. Also helps any type of fish that may be tasting a little 'fishy'.

Thanks for the tip... He usually freezes that fish and then puts it in the sink to thaw it out. That in itself is nasty. I don't know if he'll go for the lemon thing because he's one of those 'set in his ways' SOBs. I can't wait to move out of this apartment even though I'm the one that found the place. (we have a kick-ass view here)

My roommate left a birthday cake in the fridge for 6 months...you'd open the fridge and you could smell it all the way down the hall...

In my experience there's not a whole lot you can do. That smell clings to everything because of the oily nature. Try cooking the grill under the stove blower and put the blower on max. It may help a little. You can also leave baking soda around, use air fresheners, insense, febreeze the fabrics, but sometimes you can still smell it.
Can't you broil it in the oven? Those forman grills stink like hell.

I enjoy cooking as well, in fact in about an hour I am preparing Arctic Char, much like a light tasting salmon. My only savior is that the door to my kitchen area closes so I can contain the smell in there. I also turn on the fan and the blower.

Fish isn't supposed to smell fishy, actually. That tells you it's not that fresh.

I buy frozen fish from TJ's all the time, and it doesn't smell or make my apartment smell.

Purchase an O3 generator from a car detailing shop. Turn it on along with your furnace blower (if you have forced air heating/cooling) otherwise use a portable fan for circulation. Leave for a while and catch a flick or something. When you come back the air will smell refreshed. WARNING: O3 is a powerful oxidiser and is quite toxic to humans and pets. NEVER perform such treatments while your living space is occupied!

Cheers!
