Hi all.

I am a proud owner of 2 Geforce 8800 GTX cards. I try to run all my games at 2560x1600. As you can imagine I am always on the lookout for new drivers. Heck, I could list all the problems that G80 has had with drivers, but I dont have all night here.

I will try to be short and concise. The release of the 158.19 drivers was done only partially to fix problems. What the folks at nvidia don't want to tell you is how in gods name do some benchmarks and some games see such an incredible increase in performance. Look at Source engine games, look at 3dmark 03. I am seeing increases of 15-20% in frame rate.

You guys want to know the reason behind this? I think I figured it out... Im pretty sure I did. I am probably one of the few people who do not force AA and AF settings through the control panel. I set them in-game. I also run games such as Pro Evolution Soccer, and Half-Life 1 engine mods (CS 1.6 and such). These games do not have in-game AA and AF settings, and therefore I run them "plain and raw" with not post processing AA/AF.

Well, upon upgrading from Forceware 97.94, I noticed a drastic decrease in image quality where AA and AF settings were lacking (namely in CS 1.6 and PES). These games now truly look like they are running with no AA at all. Only now I have come to realize that with the 97.94 drivers (and all the previous G80 drivers), even thou I was running with no AA or AF, something was being done to the image. Something that made it look better.

I am almost certain that nvidia has secretly forced drivers to run a 2x the amount of AA selected on G80 cards until now. With Forceware 158.19 this has been removed. My eyes were shocked when I launched CS and PES. Why in the world did these games have way more jaggies now??? To prove my theory I can also tell you for example that in Source engine games, BF2, and COD2, I now get the exact same fps with 8x AA that I used to get before with 4x AA.

These are pretty bold statements I know, and I'd love to hear your comments on them. If anyone is interested, they can verify for themselves, I am too lazy to install the 97.94 drivers again. But if you persuade me I might make some comparative screen shots. I am just tired now I've been through 4 drivers in the last 12 hours.

sigh... maybe tomorrow i wanna play some dod with no fog bug now

after doing some more testing, id like to add that my original hypothesis may be wrong. I have done some testing with 2xAA in 158.19 to compare to AA-less 97.94 and it seems like 2xAA in 158.19 gives better image quality. so it might not be that the driver forced 2x the amount. I dont know how to explain it better, but it almost seems as nvidia was running 1x AA with the 97 series drivers instead of 0x AA.

Well... thanks for the work you put into checking the drivers, etc. I'll be happy if Poker doesn't flicker anymore.

So I dont understand what you are saying.

Are you implying that Nvidia was applying AA secretly in their drivers to make the IQ look better at default?

Hardly seems like a conspiracy. You should be happy your cards are faster than you thought.

hey, don't get me wrong im loving the extra perfomance. but this is a silly way of hindering perfomance at launch. I mean come on, I can clearly see the difference.
looks like its time to force some AA and AF from the game profiles... cs and pro evo look pretty bad now.

I force AA and AF in just about every game and I still get performance gains in HL2 and Serious Sam 2.
