And it is a true American Chestnut tree. They are loaded with spines and have two nuts in each shell.

Just thought I would mention I got fresh nuts falling.
How doi you like to eat your nuts?
Fresh
Roasted
Boiled

Give me some ideas on how to use these suckers up because Im about to have a butt load of these and pecans as well :D

I guess after doing some reading on horse-chestnuts and american chestnuts and seeing I have a real american chestnut tree I am going to start selling the stuff off to anyone who wants fresh nuts. $15 for a dozen fresh unopened from the tree nuts! Shipping is $7 for as many as I can fit into the flat rate priority boxes.
Get them before the outter shell splits :D

You asked for it now look at my nuts!

To the right of the shed is my Oak Tree. Directly behing the shed is the American Chestnut tree, and to the left is one of three Pecan Trees I have.

Picture of my nuts. 2 come in a pod.

I no longer own a American Chestnut tree. Turns out acording to THIS site here the leaves on my tree make it out to be a Chinese Chestnut tree. Damnit I am no longer feeling special :(

The one I am eating now just droped. Has a brown shell on the outside and the inside part had a tan skin over it I peeled off with the nut part a yellowish color on the outer and white inside. The white part is very good. Going to collect all of them and see about roasting them as well as eating fresh.

Uhh, not sure - but it is very likely that you have Buckeyes, or what is also known as "horse-chestnuts", which are not edible. Check in google images, to see what leaf pattern you have on your tree. There is a slight chance you have an American Chestnut, but most of those trees have perished over a 100 years ago due to an invasive disease. :(

Squirrels like 'em though, too bitter for human consumption! :):)

Yeah, I will definitely say that the squirrels seem to love my nuts.

We have a walnut tree in the backyard. The rat bastards come and eat all the nuts while the nuts are still in their "green" stage. I hate those guys. Squirrel hunting anyone?

i like to roast chestnuts over an open fire.. with jack frost nipping at my nose.... it's also nice with yultide carols being sung by a choir and especially folks are dressed like eskimos....

really though, i don't knwo if they're fresh when my mom gets them, but she usually puts a "plus cut" on the top of it, then sticks them in the microwave for a couple mins.. the plus cut peels back in the microwave and makes it easy to peel.. like i said, i'm not sure if they're fresh or if she buys them pre roasted..

aren't American Chestnut trees rare? Huge also, nearly redwood size?

Well I am one lucky SOB because I have a true American Chestnut tree. My nuts are incased in a very spiny shell that will prick the hell out of you. The others dont have as much spines.
So I am very lucky I guess to have a real american Chestnut tree in my back yard of the house I just bought. Maybe I should sell the damn things now :)
