My AMD is not booting and i hear a siren.

Hey people......
I have a pentium and an AMD. The pentium has a CD writer while the AMD only has a CD Rom. I wanted to put the CD writer in the AMD and vice versa. But when i put the CD writer in the AMD it did not boot and a siren (like that of an ambulance) was heard. So i decided to put the CD rom again in the AMD and remove the CD writer. I did that and everything was like before. But the AMD does not boot and the siren is still heard. I've checked all the connections and they are like before. So where's the problem? what is tht siren? and why doesn't my AMD boot?
Help will be gladly appreciated. Thank you.

If you have a motherboard manual for that computer, the beep codes are often in the back. I'd check that all of the PCI/AGP cards and whatnot are seated properly, and that the CPU fan is plugged into the motherboard. You could also resetting the bios, but I'd do the other things first. 🙂

I get a siren when I try to slow the CPU down on one of my PCs. So I'd check the fans and disable everything possible in the "hardware monitor" section of the BIOS.

On most boards the siren means an overheat warning or bad PSU. You probably disconnected the CPU fan while hooking up the ATAPI, or dislodged the cooler from making proper contact with the CPU, so start there. If that checks out then I'd lean toward the PSU bonking.

Not sure if anyone is still reading this, but I had the same problem with my AMD Athlon XP 2800+ and Abit NF-7 Motherboard. I put it all together, and when I tried to boot it, nothing happened, just a siren.

The solution is that I had the heatsink on backwards. The key is noticing that the heatsink that comes with the 2800+ (or any other AMD retail processor, I think) is that it has a ridge along one side. This is meant to sit on the plastic part beside the CPU. If it isn't in correctly, then the heatsink isn't actually making contact with the CPU. Have fun!

possible reasons for the siren...

motherboard requires the 4 pin square connector (unplugged)
ram not seated properly.
cpu fan unplugged.
videocard not seated properly.
video card requires a power connecter (not plugged in)
master/slave/cs do not match when you switched the cdrom drives.

Another possibility is if you hear the siren and your system has no mechanical problems (cpu fan unplugged, etc.) then perhaps you have the alarm level set too low in the BIOS. IAC, it is an alarm generated by the BIOS. So as soon as you can get a good bootup go into the BIOS and recheck ALL settings and particularly the System Health settings.
. If you don't know much about the BIOS settings, go here Adrian's Rojak Pot and check out his BIOS guide.
.bh.

Where's the :sun: ?

Most definitely overheat or unplugged HSF! Check the setting on the High Temp Alarm setting in the bios and make sure the HSF is seated properly to the CPU and the plugged in.
