OK maybe Jason or Rich can enlighten me with this slightly off-topic: Why does San Diego clock better than Venice? (And to some extent 2MB X2's clock better than 1MB X2's) It's been bothering me since it seems to go against the law of semiconductor physics.

In all honesty i don?t know.

Maybe the 1MB San Diego cores and the 2MB Toledo cores were fabbed at better plants and also used better quality silicon in a better environment. With the purpose being that they required higher yield silicon for the faster clocks on the FX line. Maybe I don?t know, but I think the FX line had a lot to do with the higher clocked higher cached chips.

Although I do remember at the early stages of the X2 4400 and the X2 3800, I believe that on average the low cached X2 3800 clocked higher, and was cooler too. IIRC the first X2 3800's were Toledo cores with half the cache disabled, then later on the Manchester core was released for the X2 3800, which actually did use less transistors as a result of the small cache.

Rich i'll have to do some research on Venice when I get some time. It was my understanding that all AM2 cpu's are the first to use SS with DSL. I remember AMD specifically saying that they will incorporate DSL into the s939 line, but would not accounce when the transition took place.

Lopri, what Rich mentioned is similar to what my idea on the matter has been. That they are somehow tied to the FX line when being binned or manufactored. I did mentioned somemore on this in another thread, but I don't remember what all I said and I don't remember the thread now. IT was a couple days ago but that was pretty much the idea.

No one except AMD knows for sure though.
