My AIW is better with Win2K than XP Pro

Three weeks ago I installed XP Pro and ever since tried to get the best possible results with drivers to work with my original AIW and today I did a clean install of XP Pro with only the AIW with MMC7.1 and DVD4.1 and every time I started to record I always lost a couple of frames at the start and the sound was slightly out of sync, so I did another clean install of XP with the FULL MMC 7.2 and with the same results and no matter what win2k/xp drivers I installed.

I then did a full install of Win2K/SP2 IE6 with every possible windowsupdate along with MMC 7.1 and DVD 4.1 and the Win2K/3116 ATI drivers.

The two major things I have noticed with XP is that even though is says "DMA if available" it still detects my Promise ATA/100 drives as Multi-Word DMA Mode 2 no matter what I did, in other words PIO-2. The other problem is that it has major problems dealing MPEG2.

Once I re-installed Win2K the TV was sharp crisp and clear, no color problems like in XP, I made sure that I had the latest 4-1 and that the drives were using DMA and they were. I did several MPEG2 captures at full bit captures at 320x240 and not one frame loss.

It took Win2K/ATI over a year to fix these types of problems and I fear that the same is now true for XP. So until XP and ATI stop using us as guinea pigs and beta testers I'm sticking with win2k for the best results with my AIW. According to what I have seen, moving to XP Pro with MMC 7.2 and 3281's is actually a downgrade and opens up core problems with TV and vid captures. I'm now with Win2K/SP2 with MMC 7.1 and 3116 and it's more stable and nice and I have my DMA back.

Thanks for the heads-up. I've been pondering moving to XP but my Win2k installation is rock solid. The big question is - will ATI get their XP drivers (that actually work) out before or after Microsoft forces us to all move to XP by ceasing work on Win2k?

I work for a MS certified partner and Large Account Reseller and we don't even have XP on our radar. At this point we have no plans in migrating so it's my opinion that win2K will be here a while longer.

I must point out however that my post is targeted to TV/Vid capture with the Origitanl AIW and not to the 8500DV since I didn't test that one. Second as for gaming, the new drivers and XP were rock solid.

If it wasn't for the MPEG2 problem and the frame lost as the start of recording everthing would have been sweet but I'm not ready to wait another year for a possible fix. and specially since when I had this setup in win2K, performance/TV/Vid Captures were near perfect.
