My airflow setup, clean cable wiring, PICTURES too!! o_O

Hey fellas,

I know there's been several posts in the past about cable management but it's been awhile and it never hurts to start anew.

Just finished cleaning up the so-called rat's nest inside my case. I believe the airflow has been optimized, the system runs nearly silent, and I did it all for super cheap.

IDE Cable Folding

A couple of notes:
-I only use Panaflo's in my setup (3 case fans + 1 CPU fan)
-Intakes in the rear and on the window, exhaust thru the top blowhole and PSU.
-Fan controller, when turned way down, makes the PC inaudible at 2 meters.
-The side window fan used to be positioned higher, but I flipped the window so now it's over the GPU. This is important since that 9800 Pro gets damn hot...esp the memory. The AC Silencer is very quiet, but it doesn't remove heat well. GPU temps actually dropped 5 deg Celsius when I relocated the fan.

I hope this helps some of you guys out there looking to clean up and silence their rig.

Thoughts would be appreciated.😀

Good job man,Flat IDE's,I like that (i find using round ones for a clean look weak).I give it a 9.5 😉

PS

how about gouging the exhaust grill?

Hahaha you mean the alien-head thing? Any suggestions for a replacement?

Thanks guys for the comments. 🙂

Yeah definitely dremel out the back.... It did it to mine and it is wonderful.

Why are the intakes in the rear? That's unnatural. You want a constart airflow across the mobo. That is achieved by an intake in the front and an exhaust in the rear for the most basic setup. My set up has intakes in the front and sides with exhausts in the top and rear.

The cabling is awesome though.

Well I feel if I put the intakes in the front, I'm not blowing air over the major sources of heat. Intake in the rear and on the side takes care of the major players: the CPU and the video card. When my exhaust is mainly a blowhole on the top, I can easily stick my hand over it and gauge just how hot the case temp is. It gets hot when playing HL2 and Doom 3, and during the summer 🙂

Wish I could dremel out the back, but I have not the equipment to do so.

Very nice glorygunk.

Is it safe to fold the IDE cables like that?
Wouldn't that cause data corruptions and such?
If it's safe I'm gonna give it a try. I'm looking at my case right now and wished that it didn't come with a window.

Great job with the cable management.

Comment on the fan orientation: I have to agree with the others, it's better to have the back fan exhaust rather than intake.

If you want to have that rear fan intake, you might want to duct the PSU exhaust to direct it away from that intake fan, so that hot air coming out of the PSU won't be sucked in and recirculated in your machine.

Ditto for the Arctic Silencer exhaust-- Gotta duct that too or else your "intake" fan will just suck that hot air right back in.

HTH.

If I made the rear fan exhaust...then my question would be where to place the intakes. The top blowhole is already exhaust (made the most sense to me) but should i turn it around and make it intake?

Top fan should also exhaust-- It blows out hot air that has risen to the top of the case by convection.

The best place to put intake fans would be in the front lower part of your case where it can draw in cool air.

HTH!

That case look about as clean as mine, GJ! Personally I refuse to use anything but rounded cables, and I don't give a rat's ass if people think it's weak. Props on your efforts with the flat ones though, looks good.

rounded cables tend to blend in better with sleeved psu cables so thats a plus for uniformity. but in my case it just seemed to add clutter . anyway i went back to my stock asus flat cables to make a long story of me spending hours wiggling around ide cables short.

Yeah, round cables aren't gonna be best for every application... I tend to go for mid or full tower cases myself, and especially for the cable that runs up to the optical drives, it can be hell trying to get a flat cable to behave itself and do what I want it to do. My long round cable for the opticals behaves itself quite nicely, and I went SATA for the hard drives this time, those cables are a joy to work with compared to IDE. I've never had a cleaner looking rig than the one I just put together and that has a lot to do with it.

Make your own rounded cables. Cut a slit bewteeen every 3 wires and then pull them apart. Then bundle them all together and wrap in electrical tape. Looks quite nice.

3rd pic "folding" terrible blur shot.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned that up until now 😛. If you look closely, I think the camera autofocused on a certain corner, thus blurring out the rest of the shot 🙁. But you get the idea, right?

I had rounded cables before, and those suckers were a PAIN. So thick and inflexible. With the ribbons, all you have to do is fold them at 90 degree angles...no origami experience required (in fact, origami would be a BAD IDEA).

Question: Is it better to have more intakes or more exhausts? I remember reading somewhere that one prevents the accumulation of dust. At this rate, I'll have waaaay more exhuasts than intakes.
