People of the non technical world don't realize that just because a hard drive formats it's good. They have no idea of the concept of bad sectors, and while they sell the item as working the drives really aren't in that tip top shape.
Case in point... today I received a hard drive from ebay for an ipod mini. It's a 4Gb hitachi microdrive. Does it format? Oh yeah it does. Does it work? Nope. So far it's got 222 sectors bad on it and it's not even 10% done scanning the drive yet. I got another one earlier this week that had 37 bad sectors (however that one works just fine for the most part)
I'll keep you updated on the outcome...
