People of the non technical world don't realize that just because a hard drive formats it's good. They have no idea of the concept of bad sectors, and while they sell the item as working the drives really aren't in that tip top shape.

Case in point... today I received a hard drive from ebay for an ipod mini. It's a 4Gb hitachi microdrive. Does it format? Oh yeah it does. Does it work? Nope. So far it's got 222 sectors bad on it and it's not even 10% done scanning the drive yet. I got another one earlier this week that had 37 bad sectors (however that one works just fine for the most part)

I'll keep you updated on the outcome...

here's the auction:

for all purposes I think I'm just going to stop buying parts on ebay and try to get my money back from it...

I wonder if the item description of:

"IMPORTANT! ONLY ABLE TO DO A QUICK FORMAT OPTION! WILL NOT COMPLETE A FULL FORMAT PROCESS!"

should have been an indication.

Some apple branded hitachi microdrives will not complete a full format process but be 100% working...

oh well, doesn't matter, the guy is willing to refund my money so it's all good...
