If you are having problems, this may help you.

I recently got a Linksys Cable/DSL router, and it took me a whole evening to get it working. After I tried every possible setting, having it get it's IP from the ISP with DHCP, I finally hit the solution after 20 minutes with tech support. I use an old Alcatel 1000 modem, and my ISP is supposed to use pppoe but I don't, so this may have caused the problem. The solution is to assign a static IP to the router, but not just the last public IP you were seen with - I actually had to use the internal IP. With the local lan on the 192.* network, I set the router to have a "public" IP of 10.10.38.106 (my previous static IP for the single computer), and to use the gateway 10.10.38.254 (the previouse internal IP of the modem). After I applied these changes, I clicked on a random MS link and it worked. This is a bit surprising, but I guess it can be explained, and the network from router to modem is another internal network seperate from the local net...

In any case, I hope this helps you if you have any problems configuring a router for sharing a connection.

What's happening here is that your cable modem is actually grabbing the ISP's IP address. In my case, my Wireless BB modem is address 24.221.xx.xx. My Netgear router is address 192.168.0.1, and it knows how to talk to the Modem through it's dedicated outbound port. However, to the rest of my network, the Netgear is my outside access, and DNS proxy, etc, etc....
