So, I had my eye on the 6800gt for a while now. I live in San Diego and wanted to get a gt at compusa after reading about its availability in the hot deals section. I called all of the compusa stores in San Diego county and including north county. All were either sold out or on preorders. I found out that there are some in stock at the santa ana store and the city of industry store as well.

When I called the santa ana store (closest from san diego), they said it was out of stock. The city of industry store has 4 in stock at 4pm and 2 at 5pm. They were selling like hot cakes and the manager refused to accept "holds". I was desperate so I decided to drive all the way up to city of industry just to get this card. I braved and endured the torturous I-5 traffic coming from san diego, the I-5 traffic near santa ana, and the disgusting 57 north traffic towards pomona. I called them again only to find out that the last 2 were sold.

Needless to say, I was frustrated by fruitless effort and the traffic. So on my way back, I saw a glimpse of the mission viejo store and said to myself: "What the heck, I know from online that they're out of stock but it doesn't hurt to try; it's on my way anyway". When I checked the shelves, no gt were seen. But then as I exited, a sales guy brought a box and gave it to a customer saying "You're in luck, we're just got these today". I glanced over and it was the gt. I quickly asked the sales guy to grab one. $399 and 3 hours of traffic later, I am a proud and happy owner of a gt. I totally did not expect the mission viejo store to have any in stock. I guess the online inventory did not update the store's inventory. This was yesterday and after my purchase, they had like 2-3 left. They're probably all gone now.

Now I'm running this sweet thing @ 423/1.14GHz OC with 3dmark03 at 12300. Temp on windows load is 52 and maxes out at 63 after 1 hour of Doom3.

Very very happy customer indeed.

Just a guess, but it's probably because everyone and their mother wants one. And since they're new, manufacturers didn't anticipate/under estimated the demand for these and thus can't crank them out fast enough. I know I (and my 2 cousins) want one. But we're not about to shell out $400 for one. Maybe when they fall down to about $250-$275 range (in 6 months?). We're poor students.

Look Nvidia has announced theese cards March, they don't even have any Ultras in stock, it's been 5 months, you'd think they've had enough time to figure out a lot of ppl want theese cards.

Sounds kind of like my Doom3 story. I have driven all over Atlanta in an attempt to get thig game. I now have one waiting for my at Best Buy for pick-up, but I honestly won't believe it until I have the game in my hands.

Enjoy your GT :)

I thought i had it bad..

Following another guy in the hot deals forum, i returned a pos laptop for 225 credit. (was going for like 179-200 on ebay).
So i had this compusa credit but no friggin gt cards on the whole island of manhattan!
I had the availabilty for the card bookmarked and was checkin it like a crackhead everyday.

The frigging card did become available 4 pickup on some drunken saturday, but it was after the store closed so i couldnt call for a hold. I couldnt order online since they dont accept the store credit there, those fu(ktards. By the time i woke up hungover on sunday, it was all sold out again.

I finally found card in stock this Tuesday, way the fu(k in Whiteplains. Thank god my sister lives close by, so I made a "special" trip to see my nephew who i missed so much.. n pickup the card. He He.

I had some problems with initially tryin to get the card on hold, but i spoke to someone in the business dept and left him my cc number and address. What killed me was that through out the week, the card showed instock at the store.. till yesterday when i picked it. Sure enff it showed oos last night, but thankfully my man put a quote together in the business dept and had it held.

So out i went with only 200 bucks lighter (and a crappy laptop of course).

The gt does make doom look gorgeous. I cant believe how much better it is than the 9700pro i was running. Whats weird is that i went back 2 farcry 2 check some of the levels with this card, and i found that after seeing doom3 in high detail at 1280, far cry looked like poop. The character details is sorely lacking when u play them back to back. Just a few wks ago i thought farcry was the prettiest thing id ever seen!!

Anyway, amazing what we put ourselves thru for something most ppl can hardly understand. I spent the night at my sisters so i had the card still in its box at work with me.
I was rubbing the gt box all day in my cube doing the whole "my precious" thing subconsciously, the looks i got were very interesting.
