Nothing, the damn thing won't even POST. How nice of nvidia to put the LEDs on it that let you know if it's getting power. Too bad it doesn't help. Took my 3870X2 to out and put the 9800GX2 in, and nothing comes up. Awesome card thus far I must say. A+

anybody know if the asus p5k premium needs a bios update or something maybe? i'm going to try it in my roommate's computer when he gets home. he has a 680i board. if it doesn't work in that, it's definitely DOA

You will have to give some more details if you want your rant to be sympathized with. ;)

ok so officially, my GeForce 2 GTS outperforms your 9800 GX2 as of now. I LOVE IT! ;)

what other details do ya need? i had my old rosewill 950 in there that was powering my 3870x2. i put in my asus 850 psu in with the 3870x2 and powered on, worked fine. i threw my 9800gx2 (not literally threw ;)), plugged it all in, and nothin came up. i'm running the latest bios from asus on my p5k-premium, q9550, 4GB DDR2 1066 memory. i pulled the gx2 out and put it back in, and still didn't work. i tried it in a comp i just built for my fiance, which is the gigabyte ds3l board, didn't work there either.

it sounds dead so far, have you used seperate power connections or have you used an adapter ?

use a single 6 pin and a single 8 pin to connect the card.

:)

yeah, i used the 8 pin and the 6 pin on my PSU. then i tried a 6 pin adapter. then i tried using the 2 8 pin, but moving 2 of the pins to the side (it flips to the side to make itself a 6 pin. nothing worked. the bios threw no code and according to the LEDs, the car is functioning :(

Is it in the right PCI Express slot ? Or is the DVI on the right one ? Not sure if it makes a difference, but my card wouldnt work on one of the DVI connectors.

Are both PCI-e power connectors glowing green? Orange would indicate improper power.
And, on the back of the metal bracket, there are two LED's. The one lit blue should be the port you connect your monitor to, If I am not mistaken.

One final thing, did you run driver cleaner/sweeper before all of this?

The power connections are the same as a 3870x2 so the 9800 should work. Sounds like it's dead.

Which DVI port are you using?

Did you try both DVI from cold startups because they cannot be hot swapped...

Are both PCI-e power connector LED's glowing "green". Quote me when you answer so I know you are answering my question specifically. - Thanks.

And, can we have the make and model of your Power Supply. This might help us determine if your card is indeed a dead one, or just an underpowered one. You say the X2 worked, but that doesn't really mean much except that the X2 gets enough power. Maybe the GX2 doesn't, at least in the 8 pin port? dunno.

So, make and model of your PSU. At least we can see what your 8 pin cable is rated for.

I thought that the 3870x2 and 9800gx2 drew almost exactly the same amount of power. Is there really that much of a difference?

Isn't P5K Premium X38? Did you try the 2nd PCIe x16 slot? (Although even if it works in the 2nd slot it's still the card that's at fault)

They are close in power consumption, but they are still two totally different cards, in every way. Why not eliminate all variables is what I'm meaning.

yes, that does make sense. it seems pretty easy to check if a couple of green lights are "on" or "off", too. oh, well, at least we don't get paid to do tech support ;) somehow it's not nearly as frustrating when you do it for fun!

if you read the entire thread, you'd see it was tried with 2 different PSUs, and also in completely different computer with another PSU of it's own. the board is a p35 p5k premium motherboard. as i said, the LED indicator lights are glowing letting me know it's good. both are green. i also said i tried both dvi ports AND the hdmi. it's dead :(

I did read the entire thread, and I just read it again to double check. You never, until this post, actually stated that both LED's were "green". Now I know. Thanks. I'm just trying to help here dude. And to do that, specific details matter.

Nan people are trying to help you not make you look stupid, the reason we ask the most

basic and ametuer questions is that somtimes as good as people are at repairing

equipment a simple fuse change could save hours of messing about, Obviously a fuse

aint gonna help you but do you see my point.

ok heres a quicky, are you overclocking your cpu ?

if yes is your PCIe lock set at 100 and working ?

the 9 series has a feature that when the PCIe is raised above 100 it overclocks the card.

:)

actually, it's not OC'd at all right now. it's running at 2.83, the stock speeds :)

i was just getting irritated because a lot of people were asking some things that were already posted that i have tried. the only thing i wasn't specific on was the color of the LEDs. i thought saying that it came on letting me know it was OK was enough, but it wasn't. then getting asked about the dvi a couple times was annoying. next time i'll put everything in laman's terms i suppose.

and you know as well as i do a majority of people don't read an entire thread. i'm guilty of the same thing. but i said i tried it with my "old" PSU and new PSU, as well as in my fiance's computer with a different board and PSU.

i'm a little edgy and frustrated cause i have a very expensive paper weight :(

i should also add, i have a few GX2 cards (roommate bought one from me) and tossed it in before i went to work to test it out, and it worked fine. he gave me permission to open his up since he's out of town :D
