My 9600xt runs like a dog in CS.

I just got a new 9600xt to replace my aging Ti200. But for some reason it runs Counter-Strike terribly. Giving me fps like 70-10. When the action heats up it goes way down. My Ti200 goes from 70 to 40 fps in a similar setting.

XP 333-R
1800 XP+
512 mb PC 2700
Win 98se
2x 40 gb HDD in Raid 0

I guess xp333s had Radeon woes when they were first released, but I saw info on fixes at Iwill's web site when I first updated my bios. And my card seems to do alright in other games/3dmark.

BTW all my drivers are up to date.

Do you have AA on? If so, try turning it off.

Use these commands as well:
ati_npatch 0
ati_subdiv 1.0

OpenGL or D3D? CS runs better on openGL. Also, what drivers do you have? Usually the ones that come with the card is crap, dl the new ones.

All your drivers may be up to date, but did you first thoroughly uninstall the Nvidia drivers? If I recall correctly, doing a simple uninstall from add/remove programs won't do the trick. Also, as another poster suggested, make sure you are running in OpenGL mode.

Seeing as how OpenGL is not ATI's strong suit, it may be better for him to run Direct X.

nooooo, you do not want to do that ever, DX and HL engine dont mix like two... well, you get the idea.

Didn't Valve overhaul the graphics engine a million times with the various HL updates? I know HL2 is DX, so I'd imagine they experimented with improving DX on their current cash cow.

Anyway, it's probably best to stick to OGL. I think clicknext's suggestions will solve your low fps problem.

The 9600 Sux the 9500 Pro should of never been discontinued And at the moment there is no card that had the amount of value a Ti4200 card did that card still runs everything sweet and it was cheap from when it first hit the market.

i saw cs running good on a 9600pro and an 800mhz p3 the other day, i imagine Zangrief's issue is just the result of truform being on by default.

It runs perfect on my 9600 PRo running at 500/333. Stays at 72fps and drops to 60 something on heavy battles.

My son runs it in open gl, 6aa, 16af, quality mode on a 9700pro. generally 100fps, with sometimes small drop in action.

Turn off Tru-Form (or however it's spelt), that makes CS/HL games run slow.

When i changed from a TNT2 to a 9600Pro, my machine would go really slowly too !

I couldn't fix it with nVidia driver cleaners, or reinstalling ati drivers or anything... i had to reinstall windows ! This should fix it.. REINSTALL WINDOWS!~!!

I always hated Truform, it made the glock in CS look like a limp d...

ya it is a shame, they made the game support truform but they didn't bother to redo the models to take advantage of the feature. cs would look a lot better if it had nice truform functionality like rtcw.

It's been a few years since Q2 and then HL was released. A few revisions of HL, too. I'm fairly sure Valve has been doing more work on D3D than OGL since not long after HL was released.

LOL !! my little brother still plays that game with his 9600xt and he gets well over 60 fps with both aa and af enabled!
there's obviously something wrong maybe traces of nvidia drivers still around or server problems , your card should perform just as good as he does !
But I heard one of his friends had similar problems like you with 5900fx non ultra , but he later found out that Counter-Strike had lot's of lag in certain servers, because others have the same problems in those servers too !
