My 9600pro fan is just about dead

My fan has been making noise and now is starting to stop. I can tap it in the center of the fan with a pen and it speeds back up but then it grinds almost to a halt. I need to replace it. any suggestions other than a new card? How do I even get it off?

Fan looks like this.

2 plastic prongs with springs hold it in place

If it's a retail card, check your manufacturer's warranty. If you're still within your warranty period you can send it in and get a replacement card.

If you're outside your warranty, don't care about the warranty or don't want to live without your card for a few weeks, an Arctic VGA Silencer Rev 3 would fit the bill nicely for under $20 shipped.

That seems like a good idea. Arctic silencer. Ive heard of them but have no experience with them. Is it an easy swap?

Take the fan off the heatsink and oil it. Just pull off the sticker on the back of it and drop in a drop of oil. If that works, you don't need to waste money on other heatsinks.

A "fanless cooler" is contradictory in terms!
If the cooler itself does not have a fan, it will be relying on your case fan to exhaust the warm air from the case.
You have to get rid of the warm air one way or another. Otherwise, the efficiency of the heat sink will drop because of the warm air surrounding it and it will not cool anymore.

I realize that the marketing people call those fanless coolers. But, they are not telling you everything!
