My 9600 seems to be disabled :(

Apparantly since the last two Catalyst releases ATI has f%$#ed up their drivers such that 9600s must have Fast Write enabled to run. Unfortunately Smartgart won't let me enable FastWrite, and it also sets the AGP speed to "Off". When I try to enable it the settings are back to Off and Off after the ensuing restart. This happens both with Omega Drivers and the standard Catalyst drivers. What's worse is that somehow I've managed to mess up the settings so bad that even when I go back to older versions of the drivers I can't enable FastWrite. Now the AGP speed seems to kick back up to 4x, but when I try to run any games, any at all, the game freezes. I'm about ready to reformat and reinstall if I can't fix this.

Oh yeah, I've made sure all the appropriate settings are enabled in my bios. The only thing I'm not sure on is my AGP aperature, which was at 64mb. I've tried 128mb but it doesn't change anything.
 
Erm? I've just installed a Sapphire 9600 onto an ECS L7S7A2, using Catalyst 4.10, and flying at AGP 8x alright (even the SmartGart wotsit says so).
 
I should have mentioned: at the time I had fastwrite disabled in my BIOS. (I had disabled it because it was causing conflicts with my old video card; I never thought to re-enable it since I figured because it caused problems with the old card it might cause problems with the new cards) I think that might be what f%$#ed up the whole shebang.

My mobo is a Soyo Dragon KT-400 Lite. Not sure if there are any chipset updates but I'll check.
 
Okay, there were chipset updates. Updates for my IDE drivers and AGP. (Updated to 3.0. YAY!) Now the smartgart stuff tells me fastwrite is on AND the card is running at 8x...

...unfortunately my games STILL won't run. I think I may have seriously f%$#ed up stuff. Unless you have any other ideas.

Try Driver Cleaner from here ,follow the instructions in the readme file.
 
I ran Driver Cleaner 2, followed all the directions, reinstalled the drivers, but none of my games will run. They all still hang right before they're about to render anything in 3d. I could reformat, but if I can do anything a bit less... intensive to fix the problem I'd rather go with that route.

Any other ideas? Otherwise I'm just gonna reformat/reinstall.
 
Some games just conflict with ati drivers...for instance...morrowind would crash until they came out with the...3.8 cats i believe..and the halo flashlight thing wasnt fixed till 3.9 cats. So it might just be the drivers. What games are you playing?
 
Deus Ex: Invisible War, Tribes, Tribes 2, Mace Griffin and UT2k3.

Kind of moot though. I tried installing Powerstrip like someone suggested and it did... something to my system partition. I'm running on a fresh install of 2k now. 😛
