My 8800GT Overclocking Results

Snagged this card for 249 end of December (Canadian dollars, but it does not make a difference these days).

Speeds:
stock e-VGA 8800GT
600/1500/900

OC'd w/ HR-03GT
700/1650/1000

My HR-03GT has 120mm Yate Loon attached to it by ULTRA 120 wire clips. I have mounted the HSF towards the bottom of the case with the fan below it. It took all my slots , I may rethink the orientation later

Temps:
Stock Cooler + Stock Clocks (w/o updated BIOS for Fanspeed unlock)
Idle 57C
Load 90

HR-03GT + Stock Clocks
Idle 38C
Load 52

HR-03GT + OC'd
Idle 39C
Load 55

I am happy with the results

I didn't test things one by one, and began getting artifacts in ATI Tool. But I am not sure if I was doing it the right way.

I basically set some high standards and tried em out. It would artifact 730/1650/1000 and also at 700/1655/1000 and at 700/1650/1050

So I am not sure if im peaking out properly. ATI tool seemed somewhat random as far as how long it took for an error to occur.

If your shaders are sticking around 1650, you ended up on the lower end of the bell curve. Doin' 1760 here, never tried to push higher, but I wouldn't be surprised if 1800 was within reach...

I don't understand the appeal of the HR-03GT or Accelero when Zalman makes coolers that only take up one extra slot, cool just as well, and aren't any louder (including fans).

how much practical difference did it make in FPS ... or did you have a chance to benchmark before and after?

Well, in terms of price, the Accelero is appealing as it's much cheaper than the HR-03 and the VF900.

It does NOT cool "about the same", the Accelero S1 is much better at dissipating heat. Also, some people don't really care about taking up multiple slots (like myself) with an aftermarket cooler, I haven't used a PCI expansion card in years and I really don't have plans to, so mind as well use up the open space!

Right now 8800GTs are crazy price vs performance cards. I've been playing with one. It's going in my second rig. So far I've done 746|2000 with 1901 on the shaders. I haven't tried to push the memory yet.

Yup, the accelero is way better then that zalman, and as I see it now it's even better then the Hr-03, as I have load temps of only 48 C where the thermalright has 52-55 C or so.

Just purchased the new MSI 8800GT OC card with big fan and at least 4 heatpipes. It arrives at my house Thursday. It cost $235 with shipping and a $20 rebate. What kind of cooler does it have and are there any reviews on this new MSI offering?

That's an equivalent of the Zalman VF1000 except the fins are aluminum instead of copper. That's roughly a ~$60 aftermarket cooler, and it's an excellent solution.

I wouldn't bother messing with it.

I didn't really benchmark at all. But Crysis in a certain map went from ~28 FPS to ~32

I am playing DiRT mostly right now and it is smoother in levels with other drivers now.



Am I oc'ing using proper method? What do most people use to artifact test? If using ATI Tool how long should I do the artifact scanner. I noticed I tried doing the artifact scanner for some long time, I left for 10 mins came back and it had reset 2 mins ago, So it might be artifacting on my current settings.

I have not noticed any artifacts in any games thus far.

The BFG cards overclock really well, but don't come with anything other than stock cooling. I got 700/1750/1000 running 50/85c idle/load using the stock fan at 40-70% (auto custom profiles). Maybe after warranty is over I'll get an aftermarket cooler and push it further.

Most people consider ATi Tool @ 15 minutes clean to be ok. I ran mine for an hour, to be sure.

ATI Tool has generally been the best testing tool to see how stable an oc is. Some of the newer games have changed that though. For me, Crysis definitely worked the card harder. Using an Accelero S1 and two 120mm fans, ATI Tool would run without error at 780/1890/950 for at least 20-30 minutes. When I tried Crysis I'd get artifacts pretty quick. I had to lower the clocks to 720/1836/950 to make Crysis stable.

You should make the artifact test run for an hour, and if it's stable, then throw some games at the card. Be careful with the memory at 2000 mhz, it can give you some really interesting instability issues, like a green screen and a frozen computer. It's strange that on my gigabyte 8800 gt the memory passed the one hour test in ATI tool, but it gave me a hard lock in just 15 minutes of Test Drive Unlimited, because I was keeping it at 2 ghz.
Also, the shader frequency is the most important at this card. The higher it is the faster the card will be. Memory frequency matters more only when the core clock is higher then 800 mhz or so, but that can be achieved only with a volt mod.

ROFL no kidding. I got rid of mine after 2 weeks, and I had custom fan profiles set so that it'd never go above 60%.
