9600gt would be opposite of BFG's ultra effect. Underclocking shader would hamper performance as much as core.

That's my theory as well; in fact I'd wager it would hit it harder than the core.
 
I think the 9800 GTX would show similar results to my 8800 Ultra, maybe the core getting hit a bit harder because of less ROPs.
