He started to read silently about 2 months ago. it drives my wife CRAZY because she wants him to enunciate each word to help with his pronunciation. but every time she leaves him to read alone, he goes back to the silent reading.

if you ask me, i'm not sure which is better, that he improves his silent reading skills or he practices enunciating each word but i figure this way he gets both. :)

People forced to enunciate every word often suffer slower reading speeds. Most speed/efficiency reading programs are geared towards getting people to STOP pronouning every word as they read. Conversely, people who enunciate tend to have better overall speech patterns and syntax, and often have better overall reading comprehension - especially with poetry or non-linear concepts. So I guess what I'm saying is, it's a toss-up/tradeoff.

What about when you speak the word verbally? If you read the word incorrectly you will probably speak it incorrectly as well.

My parents made me and my brother read out loud, I think it helps in the long run. In class, you can actually notice the kids struggling to read out loud even though they can read just fine silently. Indirectly, he'll gain confidence in school when he can read better than others smoothly

Just my $.02

Oh, also remember if he speaks out loud you can correct his pronounciation, but if he reads silently, you won't notice it as much.

i actually took such a speed reading course in 7th grade. i maxed out at about 5000 wpm. i learned to recognize phrases. this works better for things like novels than it does for textbook type materials.

actually we don't make him, reading is one of his favorite things.

yea but you probably played an active role in him becoming a reader... unlike my family who never did anything for each other...:|

ya, we spent a lot of time with him with flash cards etc since he was like 12 months old.

but because he likes books soo much, his younger sister and brother also loves books. that was more due to him than to my wife and I.

i think younger siblings look up to their older siblings even more than they do to their parents.

That explains quite a bit. I read slowly but pwn all over grammar! The slow reading may be because of the change in accent moving from the Caribbean to the US. I don't have a Trinidadian accent any more, speaking or reading, but there is some thought involved I think.

Although, if it's a choice between that and inner city ebonics boy, I'll take the professor EVERY TIME. I don't know that anything is more irritating (of the small stuff I mean) than frigging ghetto speak...except maybe reading l33t on the web.

Replace "ghetto" and "inner city" with "Black" and maybe you can understand your prejudices better.

Not at all. It has nothing to do with color or race. There are tons of jewish white boys out there just too damn lazy to learn to speak correctly. Same with every other type out there. ebonics=social laziness and pc sickness. In truth, I've probably met more white/asian kids speaking that way than blacks.

Doesn't matter who you've met and who speaks ebonics. Racism is about the subconscious. What makes the way that "inner city" people speak, that is a result of their surroundings, and the way you speak, that is a result of your surroundings?

Agreed 150%.

I've met people of all races who can't use the language with any degree of grammatical correctness (not that I'd expect anyone's spoken grammar to be perfect - heck, mine isn't), and not in disproportionate numbers. I tend to hate the "ebonics" or whatever it's called without regard to the genetic properties of skin color of the person from whom I hear it.

Of course, I am fully assured that someone will jump all over this post and accuse me of racism, etc., but they are free to be wrong. You know what they say about ASSumptions. :)

No, it isn't...at least, not entirely. What makes me speak the way I do is that I've devoted a HUGE percentage of my life to study...reading, speaking, communicating, etc. I'm not rich, nor was my family. We grew up in a REDNECK small mill town. I was laughed at and ostracized for speaking correctly, and reading, and caring. But I did it anyway. Environment is NOT 100% of anything...except 100% of a way to cop out of having any personal responsibility for ones actions or life. It may be EASIER to speak like a harvard grad if you're brought up in rich white suburbea, but then why do so many rich white suburbians speak like they have a 60IQ?
