my system specs

DFI Lanparty UT NF3 250Gb
Athlon 64 3000+
1GB Corsair ValueSelect
PNY Geforce 6800GT

heres the deal, no matter what game i play.. every 5-10 seconds or when i enter a new area.. i get a nice SKIP.. its only like a half second.. but its driving me nuts, even happens in the nvidia flagship Doom3

heres what ive tried..

More Ram (put in an extra 512mb, dident help)
Ran a power connector from my friends beastly powersupply to my geforce (dident help)
Defragged all my harddrives (dident help)
Scanned for spyware (none found)
Reinstalled windows (dident help)
Various RivaTuner Settings which people said helped (dident help)
PCI Latency Settings (dident help)
AGP Fastwrites On/OFF (dident help)
Disable PageFile (dident Help)

now i played halflife 2 and watched my PC.. and i noticed ever stutter.. my harddrive light was on.. that dosent make sense.. i have 1GB ram, ive tried to disable my pagefile too.. dident help... i have a Western Digital 7200RPM 8mb cache IDE drive as my main drive.. running in UDMA5... i have tried with and without the nvidia ide drivers.. no help

Sounds like the ram is clocked to high...also, run driver cleaner to make sure you aren't have a driver issue, also a clean install of windows might be in order!

Those last two things have solved every video issue I have ever had. Driver Cleaner is good if you have ever had an ATI card in there, and the clean windows install if you have been really using your current OS for the last year or so.

I hope that you get it worked out!

I meant the ram on the video card, sorry. My 6800 stuttered just like that when I had the ram clocked at 890, but it was skip free at 800. Anyway, good luck!

Mine was just in HL2/CS, the more I think about it I had to back off the memory oc on my dads 5900XT because of skipping like that in UT2004.... according to Anandtech, HL2 is really hard on vid cards and really makes stuff that is clocked to high break, even more so than Doom 3. I think that you will find that little gem if you look in the HL2 GPU benchmarks...

My X800 XL does exact same thing in EVERY game until I turn on VSYNC!!!

I don't know why it stops my lag and skip problem, but it does!!

As long as your refresh rate is set high Vsync isn't so bad

Set it in your Control panel or whatever to be ALWAYS ON

What is your PSU? and is the card daisy chained with any other components like your hard drive?
Also may want to try disabling side bannding addressing.

shows my hdd fragmentation

and my psu is some 350W psu that i pulled out of a new case my friend bought at bestbuy.. it has 18A on the 12v rail.. but ive had no system stability problems.. no freezing.. nothing.. just this... and like i said before i pulled a molex connecter out of my friends pc and stretched it over to my 6800 and the problem still persisted.. he has a 580W psu with 35A on the 12v line

and no its on a dedicated line

Just Do it... Do it..

You can always RMA if there is a problem... pending that the card is under warranty.

I'm an NV fan from a way back. I don't need much arm twisting to get me to install an NV product. :p

That has nothing to do with your card SniperKil. And I don't know how much RAM is used by HL2 when I play the game. I never alt-tab out to look at memory usage.

yeah but it might have to do with why its constantly reading the harddrive? if its only loading 173MB of stuff into ram.. seems strange...

alt tab outta hl2 once and see what hl2.exe is using
