Hey, I just purchased the evga 6600gt about 3 weeks ago and i had a 250w psu. I knew that this probably would not work, but I installed the card with the psu and it did not work very good at all, but it DID work. Thinking my problem was the power supply or the lack there of, i went to best buy and purchased an antec 350w smart power. Well, i came home and installed it, stuck my card in and turned it on, or atleast tried. everything had power but it would not even post. after trying to re hook the psu it did the same thing. It wouldnt even show the bios. So i took the card out and tried to boot it up, and it booted rite up. can some one please help me here, and my computer is an emcahines for further info PLEASE HELP ME! thanks

well, i could play games, but they did not work as good as before like in call of duty my fps would go extremely high then just crash, but wen i got the new psu it wont even boot up

Hmm, does this motherboard have onboard vga and have you disabled it?
There is most likely nothing wrong with your card, I would suggest buying a new motherboard. eMachines desktop PCs are pretty notorious for being poor of quality. The CPU, ram, and HD should have be good to go. Perhaps try an NF7-S, Ai7, A7n8x or a motherboard with some quality backing.

It may also be that the 6600GT is not compatible with your AGP4X slot or has issues, but thats doubtful. I can't help much more, since as you've said replacing the PSU did not work at all.
What I would suggest is to try another mobo, if that does not work out, then try another 6600GT.

hmm, should i just build a new comp, but strip my emachines for the hard drive and other drives and get a new cpu, mobo, and ram?

Well I was thinking you could do that if you had the funds. Because your motherboard is pretty bad. You could definately still use your CPU and RAM anyway, but of course it depends on what you want to upgrade to. (Athlon 64? SLI?)

You should definately try the video vard on another computer, to make sure that it is not toasted. Your cheapest route would be to just get a new motherboard and keep everything else, assuming it will fit in your emachines tower. You can get a decent socket A motherboards in the $50 range, and probably easily overclock your XP to 2800+ or 3000+ speeds.

No.

Are you sure that you disabled the on board video?

Can you test the video card in another computer? Did you already? Might be the video card and not your motheboard.

If it were me, I would do a fresh install of windows. Then install the video card. (If you get a new motherboard, you'll have to re-install windows anyways...and re-installing windows is a lot cheaper than a new motherboard).

And about emachines being low quality? PC magazine rated them very high in build quality and reliability (not saying they are the best of the pre build pc makers, but they have improved greatly over how they used to be). I wouldn't be so quick to suggest he change his motherboard (although it is a solution to the problem).

To the orginial poster...do you want to spend money or upgrade?

Don't many of the PC manufacturers use weird PSUs that are not compatible with other ones? I thought I remember some people mentioning that. It may be that the motherboard needs a certain type of PSU. I would also recommend a decent cheap motherboard ($50 range).

Also, you did remember to plug in the 4-pin molex into the card right? The AGP 6600gts need a little extra power, since they cannot draw enough through the AGP slot.

yea i plugged it in to the 4 pin, and i would have to belive that it does have sumthing 2 do with the psu i dropped in, becuause witht the stock 250w it ran poorly, but atleast ran. once i installed the nice 350 antec smart power.....it doesnt work with new card installed in the agp, but works with it out...........STRANGE

Did you try clearing the CMOS? Clear the CMOS then try again. If you don't know how google is your best friend. And impemonk that isn't helping the OP out at all.
